Now that idea I like!! I wasn't aware they did that. I've seen alot of kids miss state under those very circumstances when they had owned the fourth place kid all season. A lot of the time it's a matter of an upset in the quarters sending a stud to the wrong side of the bracket.

Back in the mid 70's the State only took the top two to State and you had a wrestle off for 2nd if you had not beaten the 3rd place guy earlier in the tournament. That challenge match is a tough match for the loser. You have to regroup and battle again.

I agree, with Aaron, it would be nice addition but I think we will have a hard time getting the Activities Association to add additional matches. But why not ask, add that to your Regional Tournament discussions and again at State.

Here is a solution to this issue that would work for 5A and 6A. It was proposed last year, I think Coach Oeser from Maize is the one who proposed it, at least he is the one that explained it to me.

In 5A and 6A, have only 2 regionals. These would be 16 man brackets. From each regional, the top 8 would qualify. The winners of each regional would be on opposite sides of the bracket. Also the runner-ups from each regional would be on opposite sides from the champ from their regional. This solves the problem of 2 exceptional wrestlers being on the same side of the bracket whether they were in the same regional or not.

1st round state matchups would be:
Regional A and Regional B

1A vs 8B
4B vs 5A
3A vs 6B
2B vs 7A

2A vs 7B
3B vs 6A
4A vs 5B
1B vs 8A

This obviously wouldn't work for 4A or 3-2-1A since they already have 16 man regionals

Something to think about.

Any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn- and most do.

After reading through this topic, I didn't see anyone come up with this situation. What if the best 2 wrestlers in the state by criteria come from the same regional where they finished 1st and 2nd? If you only seed the regional winners, random draw on the remaining regional placers could put the best 2 wrestlers together even before the semifinals. I don't think there is any easy answer to seeding state brackets. Random draw takes all the politics out of where wrestlers are placed. No matter what, to be a state champion you still need to win all the matches no matter where you are on the bracket.

in what coachtwink just explained the regional runner up would be opposite of the champion from his regional. i think this is a good idea. yea yea, i know to be a state champ you got to win all the matches but i also think that 2nd place should be the closest thing to the actual 2nd best wrestler and i think that the match the truly decides the state championship should take place in the state championship. i mean, plenty of times you see a semifinal match with the final score like 6-4 in OT and then a quick pin or a major decision in the final. its even worse when the kid who lost in the semis consistently had beaten the kid who got 2nd. no, its not the biggest deal in the world; but still, i think the best matches should take place in the finals, and we cant garuntee this, but surely SOMETHING can get that more often then a random draw.

Hey Brian and Mike if your reading this,

To answer your question, I haven't heard from Dawes since we went down to Sapulpa to see Barbie, Rusty and Scott. Last thing I knew was that he was wrestling in Hays. I followed Nate's career at N. Iowa on the internet. Noticed Spaulding turned out to be a damn good wrestler. As far as the Jaeger, I always have a liter in the freezer. You never know when your going to need a {Coach}Fixx.(wink) I see that Mike is the Head Coach at South. Congrats, thats awesome. A mutual friend of you guys (B. Brown) was telling me about that. As far as Slovakia is concerned: the guys we met and the amount of fun we ended up having under some of the circumstances I would say was priceless. No regrets except for losing my favorite hat on the way to a certain persons foot up my ass and giving up our passports in Amsterdamn. God that sucked.

Why not go back to the regional substate state format then you get your true best 8 going for the gold like back in 1980 1981. hold state for all classes in one location.

well first I would like to say I like some of the ideas that are being put out. I think the state needs to really look at 5a and 6a yes half of the kids make state. If you could combine 5and6 it would make it just like 123a and 4a so then you could have all fo the state tourneys in one venue and try to rotate where its at. Then nobody could talk about seedings because you have to wrestle to win.

I understand what your saying but kansas is one of the only states that has 4 state champs most of them are 3. Why couldn't you it would have 64 teams in it just like 4a and there are teams that play 5a Football then 6 wrestling that doesn't make since.
