Rose Hill holds off Labette for title

DOUGLASS - Rose Hill's lower and midweight wrestlers rolled through the finals of the Class 4A regional wrestling tournament to overcome a Labette County surge for the title.
"Labette County made an incredible comeback and they gained about 30 points on us," Rose Hill coach Darian Eshelman said. "They had me real worried. But we had 4 seniors and a freshman in the finals. They've been a spark plug for us and they really came through for us."
Zac Sparr started the Rose Hill effort by pinning Labette's Phillip Martin in the 103-pound weight class. From there, Ryan Canale, who placed third at state last year in the 112-pound class, went on to clinch his match against Zach Peters of Augusta in the third period.
In the 125-pound weight class, Rose Hill's Dustin Bowen won by decision in overtime against Cameron Jesseph of Chanute. Rose Hill followed it up with another win in the 145-class from Aaron Hynick.
With Labette not having any finalists in the upper weights, Rose Hill's push was enough to eke out a claim on the title.
"I'm happy about this, but next week is what really matters at state," Eshelman said. "To be honest, I'd rather have first place at state than first place here."
The night was not limited to Rose Hill and Labette's struggle for the title. Augusta had a total of four finalists to finish third in the tournament, including a narrow victory by Chris Stuart in the 171-pound weight class.
In the 152-weight class, Tyler Koehn went on to a 34-0 record as the Pittsburg junior pinned Faron Rodriguez of Coffeyville in the first minute of the match.
Andover's Austen Hybsha lost to Atticus Disney by pin in the 285-weight class. It was the second such loss to Disney on his now 26-3 record. Disney heads into state with just one loss on the season.
For Labette, spirits remain high. Despite narrowly losing first place by less than two points, Labette remains confident heading into the state tournament next week.
"It was a good match and a good tournament. Rose Hill did a great job," Labette County coach Brian Olivera said. "It was nice that we were able to be in there with them. They were tough last year and they were tough this year."
