I was just wondering which format people liked better. A lot of tournaments have went to a dual format along with the regular duals during the season. Do people like these better or do you like the traditional tournaments. As a spectator and an athlete I kinda liked the traditional tournament structure. As a Coach I do also like the duals. However if you don't have a full team it can be really difficult to win a dual. Just was curious to hear other peoples thoughts.. Thanks...

I love duals! These events (on weekday nights) are nearly dead because the K(Kommunist)SHSAA assigns points to events and there is a maximum number of points a wrestler can accumulate. I don't have the exact breakdown in front of me but wrestlers/coaches try to get as near to five matches per day (the maximum allowed by the National Federation...) so that mat time can be maximized.

We just recently went to the Concordia Duals last year and had a blast, seven matches in 2 days and only costs 3 points. I try to get as close to the maximum points per year as possible. Tournaments are fun, Beloit comse to mind, because I feel it drives a kid to a goal, a gold medal. The wrestlers felt that the duals were alot of matches in two days but we felt as a coaching staff that it greatly helped and the level of wrestling was great towards the end of the year. I know that when I was at Manhattan we would send some kids to tournaments in place of another due to points, at the time I thought we needed more. I realize now that the maximum number is a good compromise, maybe six more points would be better, but we really have enough matches.I beleive you can wrestle up to 60 matches a year if the schedule is played with enough. What hurts a team is league duals that have to happen, some teams in my league(myself included) do not always have full teams. Therefore many wrestlers never get a match at some duals, I do not believe that Jason Pyle ever wrestled a kid from Horton in his career. That costs points but allows for no growth for the athlete. It is a problem that really has no solution, an enigma if you will that is wrapped in a conundrum, another thing we constantly have to try to improve on. Happy Thanksgiving to all-watch your weight and have a good time with friends and family. Coach Brown

Coach I understand when some are seeking more points (matches) but IMO I believe the league duals have been a real plus for the sport in recent years. Twenty years ago I never would have envisioned this happening, but today in the AVCTL, the weekday league duals are where the excitement is at, for both the teams and fans. It is a great showcase for our sport to those who have little exposure to it. We constantly see people at our league duals who you would never see at a tournament, partly because I don't think we package our tournaments to be spectator friendly but also because duals are more exciting. I don't believe our points system is that out of whack when compared to the rest of the country and like some other rules we will likely see other states coming back closer to our point of view in the future. I would love to have one more tournament a year, particularly a Grand State or Dual State but I don't want to lose those league duals either.
