South Dakota Signs Three

Three high school standouts, including two from South Dakota, have signed a National Letter of Intent, indicating they will enroll at South Dakota State University in the fall and compete for the Jackrabbit wrestling program, head coach Jason Liles announced.

Signing recently were:
• Brock Edgar, 125 pounds, Redfield;
• Scott Elliott, 174 pounds, Derby, Kan.; and
• Aaron Pickrel, 125 pounds, Watertown

Edgar compiled a 179-17 career record at Redfield High School, capping his prep career with a perfect 42-0 record — with 33 pins — and Class B state title at 125 pounds during his senior season. He also recorded a state runner-up finish as a junior and back-to-back third-place finishes as a freshman and sophomore. Edgar finished second at the 2006 Brute Adidas Nationals and has competed for Team South Dakota at the Disney Duals and in Junior Olympic competition. A member of the National Honor Society and academic all-state honoree, he plans to major in general agriculture.

Elliott will join the Jackrabbits after making four state championship appearances with three state titles. He won Class 4A state titles at 135 pounds as a freshman and 152 pounds as a sophomore while wrestling for Augusta High School, then added a Class 5A state championship in the 171-pound weight class during his senior season at Arkansas City High School. A runner-up in the National High School Coaches Associaiton Junior National Championships, Elliott was ranked 19th nationally in all grade levels at 171 pounds. He is undecided about his college major.

Pickrel completed an outstanding prep career at Watertown High School with a runner-up finish in the 119-pound weight class at the 2008 Class A state meet. He finished with a career record of 152-11 with 85 pins, including a 40-2 mark as a senior, while also posting a pair of third-place finishes as a sophomore and junior. In other competition, Pickrel won an AAU national title after his freshman season and turned in a fifth-place finish at the NHSCA Junior Nationals. A member of the National Honor Society and member of the NHSCA All-Academic Wrestling Team, Pickrel plans to major in pre-medicine.

The three recent signees will join a Jackrabbit recruiting class that includes fall signees Dustin Walraven (Huron) and Nick Flynn (Lansing, Kan.). Walraven won his fourth state championship this winter and recently finished fourth in the 135-pound weight class at the NHSCA Senior Nationals. Flynn placed third at 152 pounds in Class 5A.

South Dakota State is a member of the NCAA Division I Western Wrestling Conference.
