Did the OW have to be a senior? Don't see how the coaches could overlook Broeckelman beating a two time state medalist in the semi finals and a state champ in the finals.

They do not require that it be a senior, it is just a simple vote of all head coaches.

If you’re going to get into that argument then why didn’t they select Jerad Rice at 285 which had 5 state ranked wrestlers? It comes as no surprise that Broeckelman beat Davis because they split matches last year. Spangler was probably the most impressive wrestler at the tournament to the coaches.

No arguments here Ricky, just curious. And you have a very good point about the 285 pound class! Did not realize there were that many ranked wrestlers in that bracket.

Just my thought - That all tournemants should pull a random start weight for all Finals matches, not always starting with 103. This might help some of the upper weights get some vote for OW. Seems so many times they are asking coaches to turn in their vote way before these big guys have time to show off in the Finals. And allot of teams unless they have someone receiving medals are gone also. It also seems that when they wrestle the finals from about 171 and up these boys are rushed through finish the match and line up for the podium shoot before they ever catch their breathe. Just my suggestion.

To see P-burg scoring only 30 pts. is a shocker. Did they have alot of kids sick or injured?

Just in our 2nd year of high school, but I dont think it matters when they wrestle Mr. Johnson. From what I have seen these 2 years, it appears that most of the time the outstanding wrestler is decided before the matches even start in my opinion. Heck, last year at St. Francis Invitational they were calling for outstanding wrestler ballots at the start of the SEMI FINALS!
I originally thought that the OW would go to the wrestler that had the best tournament showing, but I now understand it is what they consider the best pound for pound wrestler over all. Apparently, not how they performed in their bracket, but how they are perceived overall, regardless of their specific tournament performance/competition. I know that is not the case 100% of the time, but I have correctly predicted the OW prior to the tournament in all but 1 this year before the tournament was completed. Now whats that say about the selections....????

At the Liberal tourney this year the OW was given to a young man that wrestled 2 matches and the bracket was not even a full 8 man bracket. Several other kids that deserved the OW at this tourney. Not taken anything away from his talents, just not a loaded bracket like some others..jmo

Last year I proposed that the tournament director create a summary bio on each champion and email it to the coaches and have the vote required by the following Wednesday. Coaches are focused on getting their wrestlers ready for their matches. They are not watching other wrestlers. I really think the OW is supposed to be about the outstanding performance of the tournament or something outstanding in the tournament. Not just the best wrestler there. An unseeded wrestler winning it all, a wrestler who wins the toughest bracket, a wrestler who shows outstanding courage even if they weren't a champion, a awesome upset in the finals, one who pins everyone to generate the maximum points for their team... I agree with Moeder, the spirit of the award just isn't there. So if you have to give out the award at the tourney how about forming an OW committee that isn't coaching or officiating. They have to watch all of the finals and know what they were seeded, how they performed in the prelims, etc. The process definitely needs to be improved.

You know what just don't give out an outstandin' wrassler if yer gonna complain about who won it or who shoulda won it. Just give out Most 'Sticks' in the Least Amount of Time not only is it the easiest way to pick an other words meaningless award. If also helps to speed the tournament up because wrestlers want to go out and win it more if it’s the only prize besides a yeller medal.

Amen! Ricky, are you upset because the OW winner doesn't do a donut in the middle of the gym as they hoist the award above their head?

I'm guessing the MN behind Andy Griffith's name is for Mayberry, North Carolina.
