What was the best wrestling team ever in the History of Kansas?
The criteria is it can be from any class any year but better be a state champion team.

When you name the team give me some good backup for your reason such as number of state champs and placers, points scored at state and undefeated wrestlers. Also include success of the wrestlers on the team at the college at the level.

I'll start.
Back when I was wrestling the '88 Emporia team was tough.
I think they had 2 state champs and 10 out out of the 12 placed in the top 4. Maybe Emporia fan can point out some better EHS teams.

I know Ark City also had some loaded teams.

Is the Grand State teams of Kapaun too obvious of a choice?

OK then, I will go with some of those those 80's Beloit teams when they would have six state champions on one team.

I am sure that somebody has the stats on these guys. I remeber the Treasters, but I am too tired tonight to look it all up.

I'll get back if no body posts on these guys.

I have to agree w/Beloit. There were MANY state champions, some more I remember (sorry if I get some first names wrong, it's been awhile!): Greg Heidrick, Tim Benoit, Steve Brown, Todd Johnson, Toby Johnson, Parrish Blanding, Brett Creager, Blaise Klenda, The Hewitt's, The Adam's, etc...didn't they win 6 team titles in a row?

How about the Hoxie team from 1971 that won 2-1A with 8 finalist and 5 champions, not sure on who all the team members were but here is a link:
1971 Hoxie Finalist

Champions

Hoxie won state that year with 96 point compared to Oakley’s 58. Champions are as follows:
John Pope at 105
Ron Rumback at 119
Ron Campbell at 126
Mike Scott at 132
Roger Mauck at 138
They were obviously very talented in the lighter weights.

Note: This was the most state finalist and tied for champions in Kansas Wresting History. Hoxie also won the title in 1969 and 1972 with several of the same team members I would imagine.

Ark City from 1989 to 1991 had 5 state champions in each year, would have to be mentioned as one of the top teams too. Also Kaupun had 5 champions in 1986 so they were a pretty good team too.

yeah that hoxie team was pretty awesome, but the depth of the ark city teams was unbelievable. kids were jv one year behind a state champ then came out the next year and pulled a championship.

Mike Riemann at 145lbs. was 1 pt. from being the 7th state champ on that Beloit team that placed 9 out of 12, today with 6 medals, all 12 would have placed, the other 3 lost in the consolation semi-finals. Beloit lined up 12 out of 12 at the Norton 4A substate that year in the Finals (took the whole side as I remember), and also the Norton Inv. that year.

That was exactly the Beloit team that I was thinking of.
Great research on your part

Those Beloit teams were before my time, but every time we go to the Beloit Tournament and sit in their wrestling room to eat during the breaks, we look with amazement at their placer wall during that incredible run they had. We always look at 1984 with the most amazement. One of the things that makes that tourney so cool is the great wrestling tradition that exists in Beloit. They did a fantastic job of celebrating that this year at their tourney.

Many Beloit people might argue that was not their best team in that run of 6 consecutive team titles, but at the state tournament, it was the most successful of any team ever in the history of the state by having 6 champs in 12 wts., and placing 9 out of 12. I think Ark City placed 10 one year. Ark City has the most team titles at 18.

Ark City's first 6 team championships scored 995 team points.
Ark City's second 6 team championships scored 1110 team points.

Combined Team Points for the record 11 Team Championships 1,930.

Ark City averaged 175 team points per year. Beloit averaged 158.

39 State Champions
6 2x State Champions
5 3x State Champions
2 4x State Champions

Not too bad...at least worth mentioning.

Did Ark City Start that streak when there were 12 or 14 weight classes? I might also add that there were more teams to compete for points when Beloit was doing this in 3A and 4A. I'm not to taking anything away from Ark City. Jackson might well be the best coach ever in Kansas. Pretty amazing run he had at AC.

Ark City started the streak in 1988, the last year for 12 weight classes. The next year the 95 lb. weight class was dropped but there were 13 weight classes. I believe it was two more years before 215 was added making 14 weights.

Dropping the 95 lb. weight class actually hurt Ark City. Scotty Goodale 3x state champion and Brooks Travis 2x state champion both had to wrestle 112 instead of 103 because better wrestlers (state champions) were at 103. I remember Scotty drinking and eating before weigh in to make 103 so he could wrestle 112. Both of these wrestlers won state at 103 the following year respectively. With a 95 lb weight class Ark City could have very likely had 6 state champions two years in a row.

One more side note: Ark City beat the 6A state champions at the Newton tournament in 1989 and 1990 by 40 points. I can not find my scrap book for 1991 but they won Newton that year also, with the 6A state champs attending.
