We are only in our second year of wrestling, so I am not sure of all the rights and wrongs of wrestling. Last week at the Ottawa tournament, my son had a round-robin. Matches 7,35,58 and 98. At match 58 he had a scratch. His opponet at 98 had a by that round. I asked his coach (who was also his dad) if we could switch the matches so we could be done. He said he would ask his son. He came back and said he didn't want to change it, he wanted to leave it they way it was. Ok fine. A little later they boy came over by us and my son asked him if he would switch, he agreed. My son found his coach and they approved the change. They boys dad-coach came over and said to him "Don't let him pressure you into this." INTO WHAT? They had to wrestle anyway, why not get it over with and we could go home? We ended up staying 3 1/2 more hours over this. I did talk to the tournament director who said this coach was wrong to do that (this was an Ottawa coach too). The director was very sorry about this and talked to him. Later the director came up to us and said the kid didn't want to change it because he was scared to wrestle my son. So for that we were there 3 1/2 extra hours? Was we wrong to ask them to change the match?

I can certainly see why you asked to get wrestle in match 58 instead of 98. Our family including our son would not want to wait the extra time that would take if an opportunity was there to wrestle earlier like that. I don't think anyone would find fault with you trying to save that much time on a weekend day for your family. I know my family would have pursued that too if we were in that situation.
From your opponent's view, I would say the issue may have been did he have ample opportunity to rest from his previous match. Sometimes the matches could be too close and a wrestler might not be properly rested. This situation happened one time to my son about four years ago. My son had just finished a match and he had an opportunity to wrestle his next match for third place immediately after due to a scratch. My son wanted to do it since he had a basketball game that afternoon that he wanted to make it to for the start of the game. I think his next opponent had just wrestled a couple of matches before him. They agreed but his dad was somewhat hestitant because of the short time rest interval. My son was a year older and won the match but I think his opponent's father regretted that they had wrestled too soon. I felt a little guilty about it later because I knew they really had wrestled too soon from their previous matches. He was very nice about it though. Perhaps your opponent's family felt that the extra time might help their wrestler compete better against your son.

I would have understood completely if he had just wrestled or had another match close to 58, but he did not. He previous match was 36 and next one was 76 or 79. I just want to make sure I did not step on anyone toes. Also, should I have let our coaches handle it?

I sure do not think you stepped on anyone's toes for initially asking. I do not know what happened exactly between you and your opponent's family after they said no. Ideally maybe your coach should have handled it at that point maybe even from the start. I guess there is not much you can do about it if they say no (I mean in this case they have that right to wait for the later match). You could have scratched the final match if you needed to leave (not the best option for your son). I've seen people do that though. To me it definitely is understandable to have tried to save your family 3.5 hours on a weekend day.

Thanks for your imput. At least I am not second guessing that it was ok to ask to switch the match.

Who won the match? Why give you the extra time with your family? Everyone spends time waiting at wrestling tournaments. Chances are the Ottawa coach and son would not get to leave the tournament as you would. His son spends the next 3 1/2 hours in the dumps after losing to the scary  Olathewrestlingmom's son. Why make the change with nothing to gain.

Common sence says make the change as long as the wreslters get their required rest time between matches..

Ocneg, What do you mean with "The scary Olathewrestlingmom's son?" My son never tries to be scary. He is 10 years old for God's sake. There was no "scaring" going on. To answer your question, my son one by fall in the first period.

That happend more than once this weekend, but the best way to do things for the tourney is just do it as it is all planed. If you try to jump matches it messes things up sometimes.

I understand jumping matches, but all this was doing was switching a match in a round-robin. Oh well, it is over now, just getting some other points of view. Thanks.

Olathewrestlingmom, You said the other boy was SCARED to wrestle your son. He is 10 years old for God's sake. I'm sure he's not scary either, that was a joke!! "To answer your question, my son *one* by fall in the first period." I'm glad to here that he *WON* after wasting all that time for victory. Congrats to your son!!
