MOUNT VERNON - Cornell senior Joe Hambleton has been named the Iowa Conference Wrestler of the Week for the period ending Nov. 13.
Hambleton captured the 165-pound title at the Luther Open Saturday in Decorah. Ranked third in his weight class, Hambleton won four matches to improve his season record to 7-1.
Hambleton posted a 17-2 technical fall over Minnesota State-Mankato's John Makabe, pinned UW-La Crosse's Vinnie Pedretti in 2:39 and recorded a 13-3 major decision over Dubuque's Dalton Grinstead to reach the finals. In the championship match, Hambleton overcame an early 5-0 deficit to beat Minnesota State-Mankato's Tel Todd, 8-6.
Hambleton, a returning national qualifier, has scored bonus points in five of his seven wins this season. He leads the Rams with six first-takedowns and is second on the team with 19 total takedowns.
Hambleton and the fifth-ranked Rams open dual competition Tuesday night against IIAC foe Simpson in Indianola. Cornell competes in the Turkey Open Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
