Without naming specific names of the kid. I have a question for high schools. There is a kid on our youth team the last 4 years. He is a perenial state medalist. A great wrestling talent. His school he will be attending in high school does not offer wrestling. Is a kid allowed to wrestle for another neighboring school if his school does not offer this sport. How can a kid who is a great talent and the sky could be the limit for be held out of the sport he is so good at? Thanks input is greatly appreciated.

A lot of schools would be interested. This kid was state runner up at the youth level last year in only his 2nd open season. My question is- Is it legal or what are the rules on wrestling if your school does not offer the sport. Can you wrestle for a school that has wrestling if the school you are attending does not offer the sport? After coaching this kid at the youth level, I would hate to see him miss out on the opportunity to wrestle high school or possibly at a level beyond that because he was not afforded this option in high school.

He can wrestle with/for another school if his school that other school form a cooperative. However, both schools must agree to the arrangement. It is not an uncommon arrangement in Kansas for wrestling.
If agreed to he would wrestle with/for the sponsoring school during the season but for post season would have to represent his own school. For post season he would wrestle at the Regional and State for which his home school would be assigned according to the enrollment categories of the current KSHSAA Classifications.
The other alternative is for him to attend school where there is wrestling.

Yes. Find a school that is willing to Co-op. Its getting very popular.
If that dosnt work there are a lot of cheaten Catholic schools out there that will pay big money based on his success. (yes... that is a funny).

Speaking of parochial schools, I know that Nick Wuthnow finished 5th at 321A state last year for Salina-Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart does not have a wrestling team.
You might want to check with them on how they worked it out. Tate Omli had a pretty good career for ELL-Saline, who did not have a wrestling team.
Two good Salina Salina sources there for you to get started with.

There is an opening at Andover Central which comes with room and board. One requirement would be, he would have to legally change his name to 'Dennis' Gentzler!

There is a wrestler from Quinter High School that is wrestling for a neighboring school. Quinter does not have wreslting. So it can be worked out.

We have had wrestlers from Quinter coming over and wrestling with us for about 5 years now. Just need to talk to ADs at the schools and see what needs to be done to get a cooperative agreement.

IMO, this has been the achilles heel of this plan. If the cooperating schools are in the same classification, chances are good they will be at the same regional and of course at the same State.
If they are different classifications, the home school is responsible for having a coach at Regional and State for the student.

There are kids wrestling for Phillipsburg who go to Thunder Ridge so cooperatives work.

There are kids wrestling for Phillipsburg who go to Thunder Ridge so cooperatives work. I would disagree. While on the surface they appear to work, in the long term they give schools a reason to eliminate secondary non-revenue sports.

"Out here" in our part of the world almost all schools who send their kids to wrestle somewhere as part of a co-op agreement are small and have no intentions, desires or plans to have their own wrestling program. While I agree that wrestling as a sport is better off the more schools there are that take part, I think it is just as important or even more important that kids have the opportunity to participate. Finally, as a technical matter, those schools who co-op are "fielding a team" at the regional tournament. OK, that is splitting hairs.

Yes I should have mentioned that there are schools too small to field a team on their own but in my opinion those schools are about to become extinct in the near future. In those types of situations co-op agreements have been effective. I hate to see schools that are large enough to field teams (3A and up) co-op though, because as I said, it only gives schools reason to eliminate our sport.
