I am very proud of this new program's success. Next year we will have Marvio back in the line-up and maybe a couple of other Kansas natives.
Matt Baker Claims Title at Wrestling Super Region 3

Maryville junior wrestler Matt Baker won the title in the 197-pound classification at the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 today in St. Cloud, Minn. Baker took down four opponents en route to winning the championship and will advance to the National Championship in Pueblo, Colo., March 9-10. Two other Maryville wrestlers enjoyed standout days and won at least two matches apiece as Tyrell Galloway and Keenan Hagerty also advance to the National Championship tournament.
Baker began the day with a 10-2 major decision over Derek Hahn from Mankato State then defeated Augustana’s Sean Derry by an 11-5 count. He then had to go to overtime to edge Carl Broghammer from Upper Iowa 3-1. In the title match, Baker dominated host-school St. Cloud State’s Luke Munkelwitz to win a decision 8-2.
In the 141-pound division, Galloway took down two opponents before finally succumbing to the eventual champion. Galloway defeated Mankato State’s Drew Lexvold by an 11-5 count before winning a double overtime 5-3 decision against Newman University’s Mitch Arnold. In the semifinals, Galloway finally dropped a decision to Trevor Johnson, who was the eventual weight class champion.
Hagerty also won his first two matches in the 149-pound weight class before getting tripped up. He won in a major decision over Minnesota State-Moorhead’s Tyler Steinwave 12-3. Hagerty defeated Jordan Rinken from Upper Iowa by a 4-1 decision before coming up short versus St. Cloud State’s Jacob Horn.
Brett Rosedale also picked up points for Maryville as he pinned Derek Lee from Minnesota State-Moorhead in just 31 seconds in his first bout in the 165-pound division.
As a team, Maryville finished seventh in the field of 12 schools as it registered 62 points on the day.
