That is the word in Southeast Kansas anyway. Sounds like the president of LCC wouldn't give him a facility, even if fundraised. However...we will wait to see, official announcement is still not made by NEO on their website.SwayzHall of Fame Member

Exact same word that I heard along, with NEO putting together a top of the line facility.

Interesting! Recruiting for both of those schools will be an amusement park.

From the different times I have been around Joe Renfro I have come to the conclusion that he is the clone of Chuck Norris. I think he can handle pretty much anything.

Rumors regarding this news have been floating around for weeks. One report stated that Coach Renfro has invited any wrestlers to follow him to NEO next year. I wasn't there so who knows if this is true or not. It was confirmed that he did tell his wrestlers he was going to NEO.

Who is in charge at Labette?? There is NO WAY a coach should be allowed to remain at the helm after he has stated he is leaving for another job. Kudos to Joe for pulling this off but the only way that makes any sense is if Labette is folding their program.

Congrats to Joe and NEO A&M. They will obviously be getting a great one. Having a son competing for Labette in his second year I can say with total confidence Joe will be a Cardinal through and through until he leaves assuming this is the case. He isn't built to let anyone down, doesn't have those parts to his system. I sent him my son and I'd do it a thousand times over if I could.

Let's hope Labette wises up and gets this taken care of soon. A year is a long time and I'm sure Joe could and would change his mind if Labette stand up and does whats right.

Joe is a great guy and a great coach. I have no issue with him working to better himself and his family. He has already announced to his team he is leaving next year. It will be interesting to see how many kids (especially the several Oklahoma kids on the roster) redshirt. That will be a telltale sign they are going with him and Labette will be left with a nothing.

NEO is a awesome place, but this is bad for KS wrestling. Too bad too, Joe is doing exactly what he should and getting paid for what he does and going to a place that seems to appreciate him. Looks like college administration got lazy and over underestimated Joe's ability to get a better deal. Again great for Joe, but to string out over a year like this I think signals bad things for Labette wrestling.

Labette wrestling is not in jeopardy in any way. Joe has a serious team this year and he won't be sand-bagging and red-shirting any studs that can fit in the line-up. As Cardinals, many of us are very disappointed that Joe is leaving but Labette will remain strong and we will continue to battle for the top spot in the country.

This sounds very similar to what happened at Colby a couple years ago. Steve Lampe, although a few have questioned his tactics, was also a great coach and put every thing he had into that program. It was the best program in that school in its entire history, but because of bad administration for 10+yrs he couldn't do it anymore. Colby even had the money plus grants to cover a new facility for the school but the pres wouldn't allow it. Coach Renfro won't leave anytime during this season like Lampe did. Nothing against Lampe but it's understandable with him that last year because of everything he did and the school didn't care for his accomplishments. He was up there in age and the last straw was when the pres. was given an extension. At least Renfro has a long time before he's done coaching. It won't take him anytime to start another legacy somewhere else. Respect is what these coaches deserve. Wrestling just happens to be a sport where many admins arent on the same page

I tell you what bothers me more is by outs contracts with college BB & football contracts. I think KU is currently paying 3 college football coaches - and 2 of them are not working - we are talking multiple millions of dollars. I believe K-state also has a buyout contract or 2. 1 year total salary of the guys not working could support many many educational opportunities for in state minor sports programs and student athletes.

Who in the world at a state insitution would agree to these terms - this really needs to change.

K-State buyout

On May 20, 2009, Kansas State University and its athletic corporation filed suit to have an allegedly secret agreement between Prince and former athletic director Bob Krause declared invalid. Krause negotiated the agreement in 2008 with Prince's attorney, Ohio sports agent Neil Cornrich. The agreement required Kansas State to pay a total of $3.2 million in three deferred payments to a corporation called In Pursuit of Perfection, LLC, if the school terminated Prince before December 31, 2008. The payments were scheduled to be made in 2015, 2016, and 2020.

The agreement was entered into separately by Krause on the same day that Prince signed a five-year contract extension, on August 7, 2008. The agreement was allegedly discovered on May 11, 2009, as the university responded to "routine informational requests" for a lawsuit involving former coach Tim Tibesar. University president Jon Wefald denied any prior knowledge of this agreement and immediately called for Krause to resign, which he did, effective May 20, 2009.

In a subsequent release, interim Kansas State athletic director Jim Epps stated: "On May 11, 2009, I learned of a secret deferred compensation agreement that Bob Krause apparently negotiated with Ron Prince's attorney. This alleged deal was made without the knowledge of anyone else in the athletics department, including its attorney. This deal was apparently constructed as a further supplement to the buyout provision contained in Prince's employment contract. I do not know why any additional supplement was justified, or why Bob Krause concealed this agreement from everyone until it was inadvertently discovered last week."[13]

KU Buyouts

Turner Gill’s five-year, $10 million contract, would the school have until the end of the five years to pay him in full?
Gill’s contract stipulates that he gets paid one-third within 30 days of the termination date, another third within 60 days and the remaining third within 90 days. In essence Gill would have a three-month job with no responsibilities that would pay him $2 million a month.

LAWRENCE — Former Jayhawk football coach Mark Mangino and Kansas Athletics agreed on a $3 million settlement, The University of Kansas announced Wednesday.
Mangino had four years remaining on his contract, which at $2.3 million per year meant he had $9.2 million left on the deal he extended in 2008. KU will pay Mangino with private funds, using no taxpayer dollars, the university said.

I imagine Mr. Renfro had his annual contract renewed prior to exploring greener pastures - and he will be working with young men still. It gives Labette at least a year to make a good hire. I think knowing he is leaving 1 year in advance is better than finding out in April, May or June of 2013.

The difference in junior college and most 4 year colleges is in contract length.

Most junior college coaching contracts are 1 year contracts that are renewed each year.

Almost all 4 year schools coaching contracts are for multiple years.

That is why you have big buyouts in major universities.
If you fire a coach at most junior colleges you just pay out that year, which is definately not multi-million dollars.

That is what needs to change 4 year contracts for "revenue sports" vs "nonrevenue sports" it is not the same for all coaches acrossed the board in 4 year schools. Any revenue they supposedly made went right down the drain on the buyouts. Professors & Faculty do not get 4 year contracts. I understand giving some one time to build a program - but give them an annual salary and no golden parachute umbrella. If they do well give them a bonus - if they do poorly no bonus.

Contracts, extensions may put new KU athletic director in tough spot

By George Diepenbrock, Jesse Newell

Kansas Athletics: Coaches and administrators contracts and salaries

KUsports.com and the Lawrence Journal-World requested all of the contracts handed out to employees of Kansas Athletics before Sheahon Zenger was named athletic director in January of 2011.

New Kansas University Athletic Director Sheahon Zenger may be limited in his ability to make certain coaching changes in the coming years because of contracts signed by former KU Athletic Director Lew Perkins.

Perkins signed three multiyear deals and one extension in 2010, either before or around June 10, 2010, when he announced he would retire effective Sept. 4, 2011, according to documents obtained via a Journal-World open records request of Kansas Athletics Inc.

In his first six months on the job, Zenger has called KU’s last-place finish in the Big 12 last year in the all-sport Director’s Cup standings “unacceptable,” but said he won’t be making any head coaching changes for next season to try to improve.

“That’s the process we’re going through right now, a process of evaluation,” Zenger said Friday. “You then address wherever (coaches) feel they need help, and you give them all the support you can. Then you watch and see if you feel that they have the ability to move the program in the proper direction.”

Zenger on Friday said he expected when he took the job to have some coaches with years remaining on their contracts. He has not shaken things up in his first months on the job.

“I’m at the beginning of things here. I want to take this next year to particularly evaluate and look at things very closely,” he said.

Francis extension

The contract extension Perkins signed that took effect Jan. 1, 2010, was for women’s soccer coach Mark Francis, who had his previous contract — set to expire in June 2011 — extended through Dec. 31, 2014. In July 2010, his salary became $136,000 per year under the new deal.Francis’ extension was signed April 26, 2010, just before a rough period began for Perkins that included KU announcing that officials with ties to the KU ticket office and Williams Fund had drained at least $2 million in ticket revenue in a scandal that rocked the university. Federal prosecutors later said there was no evidence Perkins “knowingly participated” in the scheme.

Perkins eventually retired from KU one year earlier than he planned. Perkins had other troubles at the end of his tenure. In January, the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission fined him $4,000 over an allegation he violated a ban on gifts to state officials by accepting free exercise equipment. Under an agreement, Perkins admitted no liability or intent to violate the law.

Hands tied

The 2010 contracts and extension do put Zenger, who Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little hired in January from Illinois State University, in a tough spot if he decides a coaching change is needed.

For instance, if Zenger decides to release Francis without cause following this season, KU would owe him $408,000 for the final years on his contract.

Under Francis, KU soccer had a winning record in the Big 12 each year from 2003 to 2007. It hasn’t finished above .500 in the conference since then. Last year, KU finished last in the Big 12 with a 1-9 record and a 6-13 mark overall.

This wasn’t the first time Perkins locked the department into a coach-friendly contract with a struggling program.

KU women’s basketball coach Bonnie Henrickson collected base compensation of $1.83 million in 2009, according to the department’s IRS 990 form, largely based on a $1.3 million retention bonus before taxes. The bonus was guaranteed to her based on her first contract for staying at KU through April 15, 2009. She received a second $300,000 retention bonus in 2011 after taxes.

In her seven seasons, Henrickson has not taken the Jayhawks to the NCAA tournament, and her teams have never finished with a winning conference record.

Perkins also signed a pair of three-year deals that took effect July 1, 2010, locking up:
•KU swimming and diving coach Clark Campbell through June 30, 2013, at $80,000 a year.
•Women’s golf coach Erin O’Neil through June 30, 2013, at $75,000 a year.

Two other coaches received shorter contracts that also started on that date:
•Women’s tennis coach Amy Hall-Holt through June 30, 2012, at $67,000 a year.
•Men’s golf coach Kit Grove through June 30, 2011, at $60,000 a year.

Perkins did not return a phone message Friday seeking comment.

Zenger’s deals

How Zenger will handle nonrevenue sports contracts remains to be seen.

On July 1, 2011, Zenger signed off on two one-year contracts: one for rowing coach Rob Catloth and one for Grove. Both contracts expire June 30, 2012.

Both coaches did receive raises: Catloth from $65,000 to $73,000 and Grove from $60,000 to $75,000.

Zenger said Friday that earlier this month he gave softball coach Megan Smith a four-year contract extension. Smith’s salary was unavailable Friday, but under the old contract she made $90,000 annually.

“I extended her based upon what I had seen in nonconference play, attendance and culture within the team and her mindset and work ethic,” Zenger said.

He also said Smith was “pursued heavily” and offered a position at another BCS school. The softball team started the season 26-3 before beginning Big 12 play last year and finished the season 31-22. Perkins hired Smith in 2009, and she just finished her second season at KU.

Football coaches

Zenger also will be limited regarding changes on the football staff because of extensions that took effect just days before he was hired.

Contracts took effect Jan. 1 that KU interim Athletic Director Sean Lester signed giving one-year extensions for each of the following football assistant coaches: Buddy Wyatt, Robert Wimberly, Vic Shealy, Aaron Stamn, Reggie Mitchell and J.B. Grimes.

KU announced Zenger’s hiring Jan. 2, and he appeared the following day at a press conference. The new athletic director’s contract began Feb. 2, though Zenger has indicated he worked most days in January at his new job.

Each assistant football coach was previously signed through June 30, 2012, and Gray-Little agreed on the one-year extensions, which are common in college football for recruiting purposes, said Jim Marchiony, a KU associate athletic director who worked under Perkins and remains on staff.

“Essentially, they were heading into the last year of their contract,” Marchiony said. “We didn’t want to send any mixed messages about our support for our football coaching staff, so we extended them with the chancellor’s approval.”

Following those extensions, Zenger signed KU receivers coach David Beaty and linebackers coach Vantz Singletary through June 30, 2013. That means contracts for each KU football assistant expire on the same date.

If Zenger decided to make a change regarding any of the assistant coaches after this season, KU would owe the coach 1.5 years of pay. Depending on the coach, that would range from $180,000 to $525,000.

An entire staff change after this season would be even more difficult. KU head coach Turner Gill would still be owed $6 million on his five-year, $10 million deal if he were fired without cause.

If all the assistant coaches were released as well, the total tab would be more than $8.7 million — not including the money needed to hire a new coaching staff.

Sorry, but this has nothing to do with wrestling nor is it even a comparable situation to your original topic. I can find this garbage in my newspaper. I want to read about wrestling when I come to the talk forum. smile

Northeastern Oklahoma A&M to add equestrian and wrestling
December 7, 2011

Equestrian and wrestling are on the horizon at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College.

Equestrian will be added in the fall of 2012 and wrestling will make its return in the fall of 2013.

Both programs were approved by the Board of Regents of Oklahoma A&M Colleges during their Friday meeting at Guthrie.

“We look at it from a couple of fronts,” said NEO A&M President Dr. Jeff Hale. “When you have a program that is as good as we have in rodeo, equine judging and livestock judging and good people along with our history, it just makes sense to keep adding to the program options. We feel good about the people running it. We have a coach on campus and the facilities are already set up.”

“When you look at it overall on the equestrian side, there are just so many reasons to do it,” Hale said.

According to the website, the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) provides collegiate riders of all skills the opportunity to compete individually and as teams in equestrian competition. It was founded on the principle that any college student should be able to participate in horse shows regardless of his or her riding ability or financial status

The program is expected to add between 25 and 30 new students who otherwise wouldn’t be attending NEO.

“We will be the only community college in the State of Oklahoma, and among the few in the nation, that will have livestock, judging, horse judging, rodeo and now equestrian,” said Shannon Cunningham, chair of NEO’s Department of Agriculture.

The NEO equestrian program will be aligned with the IHSA, which has 373 member colleges and more than 8,000 riders. Competition is broken down according to experience levels. Riders have five minutes to get on the horse they have been assigned, make adjustments and then compete.

“They will ride a horse they have never shown before,” Cunningham said. “It truly is a test of their horsemanship skills.”

“We are looking for areas of growth, and it comes with little expense to us since we already are well established in our other programs,” Cunningham said. “Our facilities are one of our greatest assets. We already teach classes that revolve around horsemanship and riding. We will tie those to the equestrian team.”

Chelsie Huseman, an agriculture instructor at NEO, will coach the team.

Prior to coming to NEO, she was a graduate assistant and worked directly with the women’s equestrian team at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. She also competed at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Cunningham said she doesn’t expect to have a problem with finding student-competitors.

Oklahoma State regularly has more than 200 applicants, she said.

“That raises the question: ‘where do the other 135 kids go?’” she said. “We’re hoping to pick up students that don’t go to OSU.”

She also hopes the program can draw from the four-state area.

Numbers also were a factor in the decision to bring back the Golden Norse wrestling program.

“When you look at the numbers, there are 275,000 high school wrestlers and only 300 college options. There are a lot of good kids in our four-state area, about 20,000 - and only 15 schools,” Hale said.

NEO fielded a wrestling team from 1975-1993, producing 24 NJCAA All-Americans, including four first-teams, and numerous placers at the national tournament.

Ray Judkins had established the program, compiling a 36-19-2 record between 1975-77 and then in 1984-85.

Bill Yocum was 24-13-3 from 1978-81 and Alan Lauchner was head coach from 1986-93. His teams were 45-26-1

“It adds to the uniqueness of NEO,” said Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Dale Patterson. “It adds to our athletic program. It gives us another choice. There are more than 3,000 Oklahoma wrestlers and no junior colleges.”

“It provides a need in the state of Oklahoma,” added Patterson.

The only collegiate wrestling programs in the state are at Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Central Oklahoma in Edmond.

“We think any time you can walk into a high school and say we are the only two-year school in Oklahoma that gives you this opportunity, then it gives us that kind of competitive advantage,” Hale said.

A number of wrestlers have been going out of state to compete in programs at Kansas community colleges: Labette, Colby, Neosho County and Pratt.

“This is a great program for NEO and a great program for the state of Oklahoma for us to do that,” Patterson said. “It gives us a chance to recruit some students we normally wouldn’t be able to recruit. I think it’s a win-win situation for everybody involved.”

It’s projected that there could be as many as 30 wrestlers on campus.

“We may be turning them away,” Patterson said. “I think 30 is a very conservative number. I think we could have 40 wrestlers very easy.”

There are still a number of things that must be worked out, including hiring a coach and finding an area for the team to practice.

Scheduling should be easy what with five Kansas schools (Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland) and Arkansas Baptist in Little Rock, Ark. There also will be tournaments.

Patterson said the wheels would start turning in the fall of 2012 with the program beginning competition in the 2013-14 season.

“You need to have a coach on line to start recruiting, building the program and overseeing some of the things that need to be done,” Patterson said. “I think if we get the right coach in here, we can be very, very competitive in a very short period of time.”

What about OK City U and Bacone, did they drop?
