I think with all the rules restrictions in some of the junior high leagues, as well as possibly lack of experienced practice partners for a talented wrestler there may be several options to consider (regardless if it's permissible by the league or not).
1) Allow the athlete to practice with a club which
has good practice partners primarily for live
wrestling competition and drilling 1 or 2x a
week as opposed to practicing with the team.
2) Have the athlete practice with a club 1 or 2x
a week at night after his regular practice in order for
him not to miss his teams practice. The
problem with this is that it could put a strain
on a teen spending too many hours a week on
wrestling and limiting homework time as well as
free time.
3) Maybe a more feasible alternative would be to
have him work individually with an assistant
coach, highschool wrestler, or an outside
practice partner a few times a week during
his practices if allowed by the coach.

The bottom line is that it can be frustrating for any motivated athlete competing at a high level to be limited and not advance to his potential because of an inexperienced team.
Like it was mentioned in an earlier post, that being part of a team can be fun and a good experience for a junior high kid, but does one sacrifice advancing at the expense of being on a team. Or, does one try to work around being on a team and try to improve on his own by making outside arrangements.

It's a tough situation.

No, my nephew has never wrestled for the Winfield wrestling club. And believe me if he was 1-2 in dual meets or just average or slightly above average in his league I would not have any concern whatsover since that would indicate that
he is getting adequate competition in his league.

A valid point which you stated that I also agree with is the fact that in middle school, one has to the opportunity to wrestle with friends,be seeing by their peers(including girls), and be part of a team which is part of the overall experience.

My son wrestled at the Valley Center Invitational also. According to my count at least 6 contestants won state championships in the last 2 yrs. 6 placers, with 3 runner up state champions. At least 2 defending usa national champions. The only kansas kid between 11 and 15 yrs.old to win championship at tulsa nationals this year(placed 2nd at this tournament). Not the toughest tournament we have been to, but tough enough for us
