Petrov RS Junior vs Leach True Freshman
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Red team won six of the 10 contested matches Wednesday for a 24-17 win over the Black team at the SIUE Red and Black Intrasquad match.
First-year Head Coach Jeremy Spates said he was overall pleased with his team's performance.
"I was happy with our shape," Spates said. "That's always an issue at the beginning of the season."
Heavyweight David Devine picked up the fastest pin of the night with a fall in 2 minutes, 15 seconds over Matthew McClimens. Jake Vitale had the only other pin over Logun Taylor (3:27) at 157 pounds.
"I saw a few things we need to clean up. I saw a some things that were good that we've been working on," Spates said. "Some good and some bad, but most of all good."
Five of the 10 matches were major decisions. That included wins by John Petrov, Patrick Myers, Drew Vrbenec, Karsten Van Velsor, and Connor McMahon.
"When you wrestle guys who are in the practice room, it's hard to always be aggressive because you know each other well," said Spates. "Overall, I was happy with our aggressiveness. I think when we go out against other opponents it will carry over even more."
SIUE's dual season officially kicks off Nov. 16 when the Cougars travel to Chicago for the Illinois Quad. SIUE will wrestler Ouachita Baptist, Arizona State, and No. 8 Illinois.
