The Kids Executive Council met on Sunday, September 15, 2014. The following are my notes and are not the actual minutes of the meeting.
Each District gave a quick report and provided their dates/times for their District meeting. District 1: TBD. District 2: 10/05/14 1:00 p.m. Augusta. District 3: 10/19/14 9:00 a.m. Location TBD. District 4: 10/12/14 1:00 p.m. Wakeeny.
Bob Gonzales gave a report on the NAIA national tournament that was held in Topeka last year and will be held again this year.
There will be a tournament for high school wrestlers the week after high school state. There will be two divisions, a gold division for all state tournament qualifiers and anyone else that wants to enter that division, and a silver division for any other wrestler. Eighth graders that are too old to wrestle 14 and under will be allowed to wrestle in the tournament. The tournament and the Kids State Tournament will qualify as the folkstyle portion of the triple crown award. The gold division will use some of the college rules including college out of bounds and riding time.
There was some discussion of the proposed board reorganization. Currently we have two boards – a Kids Executive Council and a Corporate Board. There is a great deal of overlap and job duplication between the two boards. If the reorganization is passed by 2/3 of the clubs at the State Body Meeting, then we will reorganize into one board.
Several proposed by-laws changes were passed by the Council and will be presented to the State Body for a vote. First, to allow satellite weigh-ins for qualifying tournaments. Second, allow entries at qualifying tournaments to be entered until 72 hours before the seeding meeting without paying a penalty. Third, allow the Corporate Board to set the State Tournament dates. Fourth, clarify that a district is not required to hold a sub-district qualifying tournament. Fourth, require that any funds received by a club for USAW participation cards be forwarded to the Membership Director within 10 days, or at the time of any seeding meeting, qualifying tournament, or State level tournament, whichever is earlier. Fifth, tie-breaking criteria for round robin brackets will be in line with USAW, USJOC, and Track Wrestling criteria.
State Fees will remain the same - $20 participation fee, Kids State Gate Fees $4 adults/$2 kids/Under 4 free. Referees $400, hotel room and one-way mileage.
A proposed budget spending $70,000 was passed that included support for Folkstyle Nationals, Preseason Nationals, Folkstyle Camps, Freestyle/Greco Camps, Elementary Duals, Middle School Duals, Schoolboy Duals, College Wrestling Fund, Kansas College Wrestling Programs, Southern Plains Camp, Southern Plains Tournament, NAIA National Tournament, and the Senior Classic.
The State Body meeting will be Sunday, November 2, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at the Salina Ambassador (Ramada), 1616 W. Crawford, Salina, Kansas.
