I do not post much or often so here we go...
We need to change the backside matches of the regional tournament and the state tournament to 2-2-2. It makes absolutely no sense to wrestle 1-2-2. Don't say because it adds time to the meet. That is a bad reason and you really don't like wrestling. The kids earned a right to wrestle an actual match to determine if they advance in the meet.
1-2-2 right now is....no stalling calls..no one shooting...1-1 in 3rd...maybe the dreaded double stall call...Overtime....maybe a takedown...or ride outs. The fans want action and scoring! A 1-2-2 match does not promote scoring and if you do score you stall on top, bottom, or on your feet. I think it is tough on refs to call stalling in a 1-2-2. Watch state this year and keep track. In a 2-2-2 the refs are more likely and willing to call stalling. Watch state this year and keep track.
This post has nothing to do with refs so don't read into that. They have a hard enough job as it is. This post is more about taking the match out of the refs hands, getting more scoring, and watching a great wrestling match.
Maybe you don't agree with my logic but I hope you agree that we need the backside to be 2-2-2.
Thanks Cody Parks

Thanks Cody Parks I have thought this for some time but I believe it should be eliminated for all tournaments. There was good reason for this rule back in the day but with TW and many other reasons, it is no longer necessary.

Plus with the ability of the clock running more now (with wider out of bounds/in bound)...time goes fast anyway.

I agree the 1-2-2 is not good for the sport. I would love to see that at least eliminated for regionals and state.

I agree as well we preach to our kids the importance of being good on their feet and keeping a high attack rate and they shorten the very period in which we strive to make them better. Makes no sense.

Agree, and another inconsistency and reason to change: 1-2-2 mathces on the backside of bracketed tournaments, but matches are 2-2-2 in all rounds of a Round Robin tournament.

I guess we could get KSHSAA to propose the consolation side of state basketball go to 4 minute first quarters....That would get the attention of some people.

I agree with Coach Parks, absolutely changes the dynamics of the match. Another consideration for all tournaments is that it might end the breaks needed for the rest period between matches on the backside so the tournaments flow better.

I agree with 2 2 2 on the consolation side. If the reason for 1 2 2 is to speed the tournament up, I believe that is backwards. Plenty of times, towards the end of the first 1 minute period, one wrestler needs about 5 more seconds for a fall. I actually think it would speed things up going 2 2 2. It's not very hard to play defense for one minute, but if that's all you have, gets tough for two minutes. I'm not advocating for trying to hurry the tournament along, just feel if that's the reason for 1 min, it really doesn't work. All coaches look for mat time for their wrestlers, and minutes can add up during a season.
Also, is this an actual state rule? As stated, rr tournaments are all 222.

Agree with Parks. Where is the rule in KSHSAA manual saying we are supposed to wrestle 1-2-2 on backside? I briefly looked and didn't see anything.

Totally agree. 1-2-2 matches do nothing but slow down the pace of the match and hurt the overall outcome.
