I seriously doubt this would ever happen on a state wide level, too many different issues. Some districts may move to drug testing participants in extra curricular activities. I know there are a handful in the country that do.
Creatine would not be tested for, it is not considered a performance enhancing drug.
However, fat testing and hydration testing is probably on the way in some form, probably not state wide until the 06-07 season. Not for sure of the details, but I have heard it might be something similar to what Iowa does. VS vikes coach can you help us out with the particulars of the IOWA testing program?
Any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn- and most do.

Sounds good on paper, but when will it become a statewide mandated thing? Cost has to be pretty high to make this effective

Our coach when I was in Chapman brought in people to conduct hydration tests and do the body fat %. I love the idea of the drug testing but I do want to combat something stated by Michael Malay earlier that "alot of the bigger schools would have problems with this and private schools." I think there are more drug problems in small schools than anywhere, you have nothing to do in small towns so a lot of people turn to drugs!
I think drug testing should be done at random throughout the season on an entire team, not just a select athlete.

I agree with that Swayz, but in larger schools it'd be easier to get and you do have to compete with more kids, so more pressure there? kinda a toss up to which is worse....

Well I believe drug testing should be tested in High Schools not only in athletics but on everyone attending school. I would think thatthey could make it cheap enough if they so felt. maybe everyone going into school should have to pay for the test before they are allowed into the school and then at random there after. If they get in trouble then automatic testing--
I think everyone would be surprised by the amount of drugs taken at all levels of schools. Roids are not a problem here and if they are then these boys are not taking them right. I would like to see 100% natural lifting done and let the kids learn proper ways to train your body

creatine will never be illegal. the olympics have the strictest rules governing performance enhancers and stuff and creatine is legal there. plus, even if they did make creatine illegal they would not be able to stop anyone from using it because you can not detect in in a UA or any other type of test.

Considering that drug testing costs anywhere from $7-$11 per person I don't think with the educational financing system that any of our schools can handle the additional costs.
And unfortunately, drugs are just as rampant in the smaller schools as in the larger ones. Kids never seem to have problems getting ahold of the stuff. I would love to see mandatory drug testing for all students, but reality doesn't predict this happening for some time.

The test for 05-06 is going to be hydration testing and fat testing. The format being discussed is different than college and does not make much sense to me, but we are all going to have to do it in the future. 4 schools are testing the program starting next year. Wichita South, Garden City, Shawnee Heights, and one more school are those testing this system. Then the wrinkles will be ironed out and the following year it will be state wide testing for all wrestlers. Its going to be hard to pull this off in high school with some schools having 50 plus kids. It's expensive for those schools. I am for some form of deterent to weight cutting, but it's going to be hard to 1)keep people from cheating 2) afford the programs offered.

Can someone tell me if this type of testing is really needed? I myself can't understand why it would be needed if you still have to have a doctors permission to drop below a certain amount of weight. All the talk I hear on the national boards from coaches about fat and hydration testing is negative. Are they being overly dramatic or is this something the sport needs. If this will have a negative effect on our sport I hope that all the Kansas coaches will band together and try to block it's implementation.

If this will have a negative effect on our sport I hope that all the Kansas coaches will band together and try to block it's implementation. I don't know if this type of testing is "needed", that depends on the coaches, athletes and parents at each school. The coaches posting on National forums are probably followig the National Wrestling Federation Guidelines, which are overly strict and require a ridiculous amount of documentation. I know for a fact we will not be adopting these standards (I know someone on the board that is setting up the guidelines). As far as need, in my opinion, it is basically a way to reduce the coach's and activities association's liablity in the event a tragedy were to occur, like someone dying (sp?) due to cutting weight. I also think it will help coaches when dealing with over zealous parents that want their kids to cut too much weight (they are out there). I do know the board making this decision is trying to be as fair as possible, make it is a little additional work for the coaches as possible, and still protect students from harming themselves, and has talked about patterning their system on Iowa's. VS Vikes Coach can you fill us in on Iowa's fat testing and hydration testing system?

I personally think that the testing would be fantastic idea....its the best use for money ive heard so far myself!...Your studensts health and life as compared to an education...theres no comparrison...I also hear that it would be charged directly to the wrestler...any refusal to give the test in the midst of an admisistator or supervisor (so noone is sharinf piss, pardon my french). This is a fabulous idea and should be enforced!
