Railer wrestlers drop two duals
Metzler stays unbeaten at 112 pounds

Thursday was a tough night to be a member of the Newton High School wrestling team. In a triangular with visiting teams Valley Center and Andover Central, the Railers fell to Valley Center 56-9 and Andover Central 33-30.
Of the 16 matches Newton wrestled in both duals combined, the Railers won just three.
"We're making some costly mistakes," Newton coach Jude Wilson said. "I didn't think we wrestled real bad against Valley Center. We wrestled OK, we're just making some mistakes. I think these kids, they want to win, but we've got a lack of experience. We've got some upperclassmen who probably didn't perform as well as they should've tonight, and we've got to get them going."
Remaining undefeated at 112 pounds was Newton senior Seth Metzler. Metzler pinned Valley Center's Seth Mertins in 3:40 -- his only match of the triangular.
Suffering disappointing first losses were seniors Tim Klock and Damian Nightingale. Klock fell twice at 215 pounds -- an 11-2 loss to Valley Center's Justin Naccarato and a pinfall to Andover Central's Atticus Disney late in the first period of their match. Nightingale dropped his first match to Valley Center's Beau Williams 9-1, but came back in the second dual and pinned Andover's Jeff Johnson in 3:34.
Also winning a match for Newton was senior Tory Roberson. Roberson won his first match against Valley Center's Dylan Rice by major decision, 13-4, but lost his second match against Andover's Edgar Padua by two points, 3-1.
"I thought Tory wrestled a quality match, and if we can get that kind of work out of him, I'll be pleased," Coach Wilson said.
Newton will get a day's rest before heading to Douglass Saturday to compete in the Douglass Invitational, an early-season barometer of where a team stands. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m.
