Hate to call favorites, but I've really been impressed with Nathan Furches. He is a great wrestler on the mat and an outstanding young man off the mat, I expect him to easily be a 4 time placer barring major upsets or injury.

Not to doubt the opinion of "The Swayz" but will Nathan have some of the same problems that Donny Altman have in being too light?

Go Nathan! I'd love to see him become a 4X state champ.

I think Andale is expecting some instant success with at least 2 of their freshman. If I heard right, Bo Beard and Tyler Caldwell will be rejoining the state in Andale. Just rumors I hear though.

Nathan is bigger now than Donnie was last year at this time, about 4 pounds heavier. He will likely be between 110-115 after Summer and Fall work outs in the weight room, cutting down to 103. I don't know if that is too small or not. He is wrestling 105 this weekend, although only weighing between 96-104 depending on when he weighs in. Last weekend at WHY tournament he weighed in at 96.7. I have to also say this, and I think Randy illudes to it. Derby has a tough room and I wouldn't count out about 4 or 5 wrestlers for that 103 spot at Derby. Nathan is going to have a hard enough time making varsity, I'm not too concerned about him at a state level yet, he hasn't earned that right. One step at a time, work hard through the Summer, hopefully make varsity in the Winter.

A name to not leave out is Trent Cox. I expect Trent to make a run for a championship next year as a Freshman. In my opinion, pound for pound, Trent Cox is possibly the best wrestler in the state of Kansas.

Some Topeka kids--

2 good lighter weight freshmen for Washburn Rural will be Chris Dugan and Brook Biswell.
Biswell will be a state medal force if at 103, if he is at 12, he will still do well and help fill out a very good lower weight line up for Rural with Dugan at 103

Zach Reeb of Topeka Junior Vikings--112lb'er will be solid as well at high? or Seaman?

I heard that those two were going to Goddard next year...but like you said these are all rumors...
Also heard that little Cole Zoglman was thinking about Goddard

Martial, don't know where you are coming from sometime, hope this is just trying to fit into your signature. Nate did look at the thread last night and just shook his head. Does he have fun at practice? Yep, does he work hard? I think so. How is he doing in the practice room? Maybe you need to come and see him sometime. As to my thoughts, Nathan has a chance to make varsity, which is the first and only obligation and thought at this time. I know many things can happen, and do happen, I also know that many kids also want that varsity spot, (why worry about state or anything else until you earn the spot?). Any speculation other than that at this time is in my opinion, a waste of time.

When questioning mr. Furches' maturity, one needs to take into consideration that at his weight, there will not be nearly as muchcompetitive maturity as in the middle and upper weights. Keep in mind that after all the development of younger wrestlers in recent years, Roy Oeseris still the only four timer who won all his titles at weights in excess of 150 pounds. I for one don't see a lot of maturity problems in Nathan, but at the lightest weight he will be wrestling mostly freshman and sophomores. I don't seem to notice that he has too much difficulty awhen he wrestles higher weights, either.

Furches is over rated and not intense. YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THIS KID IF YOU THINK THAT.
Mr. Furches is right, he will have kids in his own practice room that can beat him but I would not count on it happening more than once.
Nathan is the real deal and with the coaching staff at Derby High being what it is, I look for Nathan to be someone that people are going to have to deal with if they want to win at 103LBS in 6A or any tournament that Derby goes to.

i find it a bit odd that a lot of people don't know if this kid can make varsity or not while others think he can be a state champion...i know derby has that altman kid, but surely if furches and altman are good enough to win state at 103, one of them will be good enough to place at 112...or is there another stud in derby's wrestling room that is in that weight range i'm not remembering?

Altman will be 12 or 19, Miller is in the mix at that weight and Stephens will also likely be in the mix near that weight. Possible one could go up to 24. Nate will be around 10 cutting to 103, there are however several more kids in the room. Altman around 15 now, Stephens around 20 right now, don't know for sure where Miller is at. Also at Derby around 03 will be Marlatt, Smizer, Pruit, Windham, and several others. Bottom line is that the lower weights at Derby are stacked with a ton of potential. There will be JV wrestlers who if on varsity would be able to place at state.

Just moved into the Wichita area. Looking for a open mat room to get some work outs over the summer months. Weighs about 107 right now. Fair to average wrestler. Not looking for freestyle or Greco - only folkstyle right now. Any one have any suggestions? Thanx

Hey Mike, welcome to the area. I can work out something with my son and yours if you want for work out time. There is another 103 pounder 2 doors down from me, Dante Rodgers who may also be open to working out. Email me. I don know that Nate is pretty tied up with FS/Greco for now, at least through July. The kids can always get some time in the room, and some folks want to have the work out when possible at a few different locations this summer.

On your name, did you know of your famous namesake? One of my favorite bands of all time is The Alarm. Their lead singer was named Mike Peters.
