What are the KS. rules on a kid wrestling at the same weight in two different age groups at the same tournament? Does this happen alot? I can understand wanting the mat time. We've been to 4 tournaments and averaged 3 matches over the course of 2 hotel rooms and several hundred miles not to mention the time spent at the tournaments. It is all worth it though, but I wouldn't put my kids in two brackets so they can get more mat time per tournament, mainly for safety. If everyone did this tournaments would never end. Haven't seen this before and was looking for some experienced opinions.

Dear Coach Tee,
I believe Mr. Salyer will be able to confirm what I have to say. As you may know USA Wrestling Kansas sanctioned tournaments follow National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) rules, with the exception of a certain list of Kids Rules modifications. These mods are generally in place to facilitate the additional demands of a kids tournament, such as needing to have 'half' or 'quarter' mats, and more than 5 matches a day possibly. In any case NFHS rules number 1-2-2 states that "No Wrestler shall represent the school in more than one weight class in any meet." In this case you can substitute the world "school" for club. To my knowledge there is no kids modification to this rule and therefore the answer to your question is explicitly no. I have been to a few tournaments where this issue was brought up and the wrestler was forced to scratch from all brackets except one. People will argue that is not good for kids to wrestle that much in one day etc etc etc. I won't offer my opinion on that part. However if you would like to be absolutly sure you should contact Greg Grater the state director, or Mike Juby the state chairman.

I believe that you are wrong. I have seen it and I have done it this year. I believe threr is not a rule on this. I think the only requirement is that you fit under the age. I may be incorrect on that in which case do we give back the trophies or medals.

You can not do it in Kansas. You can in Oklahoma and other states but not here. Regarding the medals and trophies, I wouldn't give them back but I wouldn't let out who you are right away either. I think they have the Sayler shooting range to take care of all rules violaters.
By the way, this is what I have been told in the past about the rule, not about Richard.

I don't believe there is a rule on this for kids, but the bottom line is some tournaments will let you do it and some will not. My son has done it at tournaments both in KS and in other states.

I will say this however it's really only practical in split tournaments when you can wrestle one in the morning and one the afternoon.

Just because you have seen it done, doesn't mean that is is strictly allowed as per rule. I will check on this with the appropriate people.

Nigel did a pretty good job of explaining the rule, as it relates to Kansas. There is a technical exception available when the tournament is being wrestled in a split format. The split sessions are considered separate competitions for this purpose; therefore, a wrestler can compete in two different age groups if the two divisions are held in separate sessions.
A separate but related issue is the ability to wrestle in an older division than the child's actual age. The Kids division's rules for non-qualifying events allow tournament directors to combine age classes, so this is permitted only when the tournament director has expressly allowed it.
