Coach Alley,
Coach Shelton doesn't put one of your kids on his fantasy team? Time to warm up the Photoshop!

Dyer's got to be right up there for 189.
But as for Conaghan, as good as he was, Coleman would work him. That guy's good.

I'm a little biased, but for coaches I'd have to go with Bill Pickenpaugh (Hoxie) also in the KWCA hall of fame. Or Kirk Baker (Hoxie), last 13 years 6 team state championships, about to win another this year.

i didnt know this about my school until yesterday, but back in the 70's a guy named scott luscien (sp) was a 3x state champ, but my coach told me that the guy could have easily been a 4x state champ but shawnee mission school district at that time had 3 year high schools and did not allow 9th graders in junior high to wrestle.

I know from talking to a lot of people that May was an amazing wrestler, but most people find it hard to consider him the greatest ever at his weight. Perhaps it was because of his style, or perhaps there are other reasons. I just know that his senior year, a lot of people thought Matt Murray was a better wrestler than May. I'm not taking away his accomplishments at all, (to say a 4 timer is unimpressive is absurd), I just don't think he was the best EVER.

May probably had to work harder than any other 4-timer to get his SC's. Check out his finals scores: 10-8 OT, 5-3 OT, 4-3, and 12-6.

I am really going to show my age here but Stan Falkender from St. Francis and Quenton Horning from Norton as well as Steve Lampe and Doug Duell are the finest wrestlers I have ever seen in the state of Kansas. I know a lot of people outside of Western Kansas (yes I did capitalize Western) didnt get a chance to see them but they were amazing. I saw them and I have seen everyone since then and I never saw anyone like them in this state. Some of you old timers like me might have seen them. Fisher was a tough little dude too. That was the hey day of the NWKL. They were no fun to draw I can tell you that. Gary Walters of Sainty was another one and J.D. Armstrong of Liberal was another. They were awfully tough.

As for coaches. The best coach I ever coached against was Delber Erickson of Newton. Delbert was a very quiet guy but he could get more out of his marginal kids than anyone I have seen. He won several state championships at Newton High and they haven't won much since he left there. Jake Durham at Norton was a great one too. There was a great one for many years that coached a lot of places and never really got his due and that was my great late friend Gerald Sadowski. If they ever gave an award for class I salute him for it and I miss him.

Hey westphahl, did you coach against Ken Piazza?
Who is the best coach currently? I vote for John Flores. What he has accomplished at two different schools is amazing!! Look at the Leoti program now--is it still existent?

Westphal- Did C. Chaney place at nationals? I know he was a bad-a in high school. I think that all-american should be a requirement for this fantasy team.

Super-Duper (at what I don't know) Boyle was on the practice squad with the Bengals last year. He tore his ACL again and suffered nerve damage which ended his career. He's in Marshall getting his master's and is Grad Assistant Strength Trainer.
Any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn- and most do.

You really think that losing in the National tourney to the number 1 ranked guy from Washington 2-1 and the number four ranked guy in overtime would preclude you from this little fantasy team huh? Wow guess that precludes almost everyone that ever wrestled in this state. Thats what happened to Chaney at the nationals. He went 2-2 and was a match away from placing. If everyone on this team wrestled exactly the same people at that particular tourney I would agree with you but I think that logic is silly. He was a bad *** you are right, and I would sit in his corner against any 215 that ever wrestled in this state.

Coach B: Yep I coached against the Pizza Man and he was a heck of a coach. Flores is too but don't tell him I said that because it will ruin my deal with him. He is awfully good, all you got to do is look what has happened everywhere he has been. His kids have that special toughness that he had when he wrestled. Kenny was a great one and he taught some of the best cradles of anyone I have gone against and was a heck of a guy. I got lucky, I got to coach against a lot of really good people and enjoyed it immensely. Thanks for bringing up those two guys. I think Wayne Jackson never got his due. Gosh he was great and was he tough minded. Another quality guy off the mat as well.
