Anybody else think it's crazy that we can sit in English class and bust our butts to pull a B yet a Spanish kid can Hable Espanol and earn an A for Spanish!!! Aye Carrumba.

I think it's crazy that people who speak english as their primary language can't speak and write english well enough to get an A!!! Please give me your explanation for that!!

It's not very hard to explain. In English class you are doing an in-depth look at all aspects of the English language, rather than just how to speak and write it. You read great literature, write five-paragraph essays, analyze sentence structure, as well as many other things. However, if you are taking a lower level Spanish class, or any language for that matter, you are only learning things such as tenses, sentence structure, and basic vocabulary. I mean, until you get into upper tier courses you don't do anything nearly equivalent to a high school english class, aside from reading a book or two. In short, rather than do all of the crap I listed above, someone who already speaks a language and is taking that same language course really just has to spout off basic sentences, like "Hi, my name's Joe" or "Could you direct me to the supermarket, I need some apples," things you almost every child could say and write by the first or second grade. The only kids who run into problems are the ones that learned to speak a language when they were young, but did not learn how to write it.

LancerM, I commend you for a very well written response. However, I believe my point is still valid. I agree with you and Sweazy that it should be relatively easy for someone who speaks a foreign language as their primary language to get an A in a foreign language class. I do contend however, that it should not be difficult for someone who speaks English to "pull a B" by the time they get to High School and College. Yes, in some English classes you are required to "read great literature". It has been my experience that the required books have always been in English, therefore, that should not pose a problem. While we are not all blessed with the same level of creativity, writing an essay that is worthy of at least “pulling a B” should not pose a problem to anyone who has been paying attention in class during 12 years of studying English. As far as analyzing sentence structure, again, it comes down to paying attention in class and doing the necessary homework. The only valid excuse is if you simply lack the intelligence to comprehend the material. How do you learn wrestling moves? You learn through correct repetition during practice. How do you learn English? You learn through correct repetition during 12 years of public (or private) schooling. Do you disagree with me that most people should be able to “pull a B”, if not an A, in College English?

its the same as math. some people r good at it and others arent. i know a few friends that r great in math, but r cruddy in english. they dont comprehend or write that well, but can solve complex problems. its not that they r dumb, its just people have strenghts in different aspects of education.

I don't accept that as an excuse. If you were intelligent enough to learn to speak in the first place, you are intelligent enough to learn to do it correctly. By doing it correctly you should be able to achieve an A or B grade. While not everyone is talented enough to write "The Great American Novel", most people are capable of being competent in English if they apply themselves. Every day I see ohterwise intelligent people who are held back in achieving career goals because they never thought it was worthwhile to pay attention in English. Now they cannot speak or write clearly enough to be considered for advancement. If it sounds like I am preaching it's because I am. I can't stress enough how important it is to master the basic skills: reading, writing and arithmetic. Okay, I'll get off my soapbox, quit acting like an old codger and stop being a "D to the ***banned**" now. Hopefully some of you who read this will at least believe me. Word!

Now, I know it's not really my style to jump into topics and post numerous times, but I figured I'd break from my usually withdrawn status on this one...(and yes, I know the topic is Cody Bell.)
If everyone who spoke English was able to get an A in college English, then why would we need grades? I do believe that if a person had grown up speaking the language and had an average grasp of the language, then they should get a "C". For isn't a "C" a grade of "average" by definition? If a student "pulls a B," that means they have an above average grasp of the language, no?
But I digress. Mr. Gaither, this isn't me trying to be a thorn in your side, I assure you. We've all been D to the **banned**s every once in awhile, it's okay. I think what we have here is a matter of you being Old School and rocknraider being just plain lazy. Back in MY day a kid would WORK for his education...dang kids with their Nintendos and their LeBrons...

Prant, I would have been disappointed if you had not weighed in on this subject. I agree with your logic to a certain extent. With only average effort, one should be able to achieve a C in English. With a little more than average effort, a B should be within reach. With even more effort, an A is achievable. Pranted (sic), we all have varying levels of innate intelligence. However, if I search deep within my memory, I don’t recall that College English 101 required an IQ in the genius range. While we started this off by discussing grades, my real desire is that we all expend enough effort in English class to be competent. As I stated earlier, many supposedly educated people I work with (engineers and other technical folk) appear uneducated because of their poor language usage. A number of posters on this board appear the same. I don’t claim to be perfect and if you read my posts closely enough I’m sure you can find some errors. If early in life someone had told me that English really was important, I would have had a much easier time pulling Bs and As in College English class. …. Okay, that’s BS, I would not have listened any more than you youngsters are going to listen to me now.
If you strive to be only average, you will likely never be anything other than just that. Now I’m starting to ramble and philosophize so I’ll stop.
P.S. Back in MY day, we had Atari (Pong) and Coleco (Breakout). P.P.S. Who the heck is this Cody Bell anyway and does he actually have a chance of taking 1st at State?
