PROPOSAL TO KSHSAA DUAL STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT QUALIFYING PROCESS: top 4 teams in each Regional tournament qualify for a 16-team Dual State for each class in case two teams are tied for fourth place, the following criteria will be used: 1) most Regional top six placers; 2) most top four placers; 3) most top two placers; 4) most champions; 5) most wins in Regional tournament (not including byes); 6) highest win pct. in Regional tournament; 7) most wins head-to-head (between two teams in question); 8) coin toss CALENDER SCHEDULE: one-day tournament, four mats for each class the Regional and Individual State tournaments will be moved up one week, with the Dual State tournament held the weekend which is currently the Individual State weekend teams still allowed 30 scheduling points BRACKET ARRANGEMENT: 16 teams in bracket, single elimination, semi-final losers wrestle for third place Round 1 @ 10:30 a.m. - four mats Round 1 (cont.) @ 12:30 p.m. - four mats Quarterfinals @ 2:30 p.m. - four mats Semi-finals @ 4:30 p.m. - two mats First/Third place @ 6:30 p.m. - two mats Brackets will be set using the same formula used to set the Ind. State brackets (First A vs. Fourth B, Second C vs. Third D, etc.) MISCELLANEOUS: teams may weigh-in any 18 wrestlers and adjust their lineups throughout the day as per National Federation rules top three teams receive trophies and medals for each team member NOTES: this event is fan and media "friendly" as it is easy to follow this event gives a wrestler a chance to compete in a state-level event even if he may not have been able to qualify for Ind. State....more opportunities and recognition for kids!! a great promotional event for our sport and its top teams rewards the programs with balance strength throughout the lineup 20 of 48 states that sponsor wrestling have a Dual State tourney....Doug Moore (Concordia wrestling coach) contacted these states and all who responded had very positive comments about their Dual State events only twice in the history of the Iowa Dual State has the same team won both the Individual State and Dual State team title The plan is to run the event for two years in this format, then revisit it and make any necessary adjustments

Just as colleges have National Duals and 20 of 48 states also have Dual State Tourney's, I also agree that this would be a massive imporvement on Kansas Wrestling. With such and easy format to follow and a fan friendly environment that is based on an individual and team concept simultaneously, there is no reason for this not to pass. After we pass this, lets then mabye concentrate on a Grand State Tourney for individuals. This is a great way to get colleges to come see Kansas wrestling.

Hey everyone:
Let's get this info passed onto your school administratior, i.e. athletic directors, vice principals, principals. Have everyone in your school pass the info on then the administration will know that we really want this to pass. Therefore, they will vote for it. If however, we don't let the upper crust know we want a dual state, then they will think nothing of it. Get out and support wrestling in this great state. Let your administrators know that Kansas wants this proposal to pass.

There will always be an individual state tournament. Kit Harris and Doug Moore along with several other coaches have put a great deal of time into this proposal. The biggest hangup seems to be the fact that wrestling would get two state championship tournaments instead of one. Please discuss this proposal with your administrators. it will help our sport out tremendously.

Just to lend another voice to the chorus, coaches let's get behind this proposal and take it to our administrations as soon as possible. Wherever Dual State tournaments have taken place they have been successful, and a positive experience for everyone involved. Whatever we can to promote our sport in this state is a positive thing, so let's get behind this proposal that Kit and Doug and the rest of the KWCA committee has worked so hard and get this thing passed.

As a former High School coach I am glad to see the Dual State format take place! I only question the 16 team bracket, think the thing could be done with an 8 team bracket, same format best 2 teams of regionals. In this senerio 1/2 of the 6-5A teams would compete while only 1/4 of 4-A would have a chance. Would however welcome a 16 team bracket of all regional winners (6-A through 1-A) to compete for the overall dual championship of the state. Just A Thought!

The reason that the 16 team field was selected is the fact that you are qualifing for the state Dual tournament at the regional Individual tourn. There are times that the top two teams in each regional tourn. are not the top two dual teams. So we thought if we could take the top 4 teams from each regional that would almost guarantee that the best dual teams would get into the Dual State tourn. The other way to do it would be to put every team in the state into Dual State Districts, and they would be required to dual all of these teams sometime during the season. Oklahoma currently does this.

As for when it's going to take place, look for two years or so from now. We still have to get through administration support, then get it past KSHSAA, then find sites, etc. But hopefully, a good head of steam from a groundswell of support from the state's coaches will really get things going.
