I think that everyone should stop worrying about who's ranked where. Ranking don't mean anything, rankings are for the public. If we all went by rankings there wouldn't be a point to wrestle. Just cause you're ranked 3rd or something, doesn't mean upsets don't happen. I don't think anyone should put any stock into any rankings.

Yea, but when you're ranked it just puts a big target on you so kids will be more out for you, they will want to beat you more. So they can have the privilage of walking around saying, "I beat the #2 kid in the state"

I was a junior when the Coaches Association first started publishing the rankings. Have to admit that it was nice being recognized. The fact that I was ranked second most of the year gave me a lot of motivation to prove the poll maker wrong.

But, people react differently. Some people view rankings as a bullseye on their back and that causes unnecessary pressure. Some find them motivational. And some don't give a darn about them.

To me the early season rankings are bogus, because it is nearly impossible to get everyone aligned properly and to know who is going what weight at that early stage of the season.

But the further into the season we get, the more meaningful I find them. I do feel our rankers do an admirable job. It has to be a tough one and a thankless one too - how many people contact them to say nice job vs. how many certainly contact them to let them know about the bad choices?

Rankings are also good to incite fan interest into our sport, which is important too - because we don't get the notariety that the other winter sport does. So if we can get fans interested - especially the media - that's a plus.

Another area I think rankings benefit is in collegiate recruiting. Every college coach in America knows the best of the best, regardless of the state. But these rankings could alert these recruiters to the lesser known talents across our great state. So it could be a benefit to our high school athletes by enabling them the opportunity to attract the attention from the coaches at the next level. And this could help pay for a college education.

YOu're right Les...rankings don't mean a hill of beans early. Also, guys injured in the fall sports season are often not ranked...like Brett Hille of Trego, a defending 321A State Champ not even ranked. He should be back after the holidays and will climb into the rankings then.
