Carroll sweep sduals
BY SCOTT SEEL Wichita Eagle correspondent
Jamie Finkeldei's Bishop Carroll wrestling team knew all along it would need to beat three of the best wrestling teams in the City League in a few short weeks in order to have a shot at another league title.
And that's precisely what they did.
The Eagles swept their double dual with West and arch-rival Kapaun Mount Carmel on Thursday, beating host Kapaun 27-20 and West 78-5.
The wins give Carroll an unbeaten City League duals record and half of the points necessary to win the league title. The other half will be awarded at Saturday's league meet.
"We're just very happy to get the win," Finkeldei said. "It was a tough dual because it had no flow to it, and we weren't able to get any momentum even though we were winning. To our credit, we kept winning."
The first match set the tone for the dual.
Kapaun's Stephen Santiago and Carroll's John Keller were tied at 2 after regulation.
And after the first overtime.
And after the second overtime, when Keller was awarded the victory by decision.
"We knew it was going to be like that," Finkeldei said. "We're going to keep seeing them (Kapaun), too, at City League, regionals and state."
Kapaun coach Tim Dryden wasn't surprised, either.
"They're still the best team in the city, but if we wrestle them 10 times, we're going to win some," Dryden said. "We won the matches that could have gone either way."
In the 152-pound division, Kapaun elected to forfeit to Carroll's David Loos by bumping Chas Snodgrass up to 160.
"Loos is what I would consider their best kid," Dryden said. "We felt like we still ran the risk of getting pinned there and we were hoping we could get a win at (160)."
The strategy didn't play out quite as Dryden had planned, as Snodgrass lost 3-0, but only after Carroll's Thomas Ronck scored three third-period points.
In the third dual of the night, Kapaun defeated West 67-12.

What is the point system? To be the overall, is there a certain point breakdown in duals such as points won by?

5? and two wins? Did the West Coach get a Tech? Why didn't Deshazer wrestle in that dual?

Sweazy, the GWAL champion is determined by the average of the place finished in the league duals along with the place finished in the league tournament.

Maybe we might see it as the State Finals match.

Given the reaction from the Carroll fans, I think that there were more than a few people that were looking forward to a Deshazer-Detmer match up. We should have several more opportunities to see a match up between these two kids. If everything works out in the next 3 weeks, there is a possibility that they will see each other 3 times (City League, regionals, and state). Good luck to both wrestlers.

Good luck to both wrestlers. Exactly! Barring a major upset, these two will meet Saturday night in the 130 lb. Championship finals at the GWAL Wrestling Tournament. Fortunately, my front row seat for the finals is already reserved.

barring a major upset... tell me, how would detmer beating hurd even be considered an upset at all? 130 is one hard weight class this weekend at the GWAL tourney.

one_on_one, I think that you might have misunderstood Mr. Salyer's comments. That being said, 130 at City League has 3 wrestlers that have shown that they are more than capable of winning any other tournament that they wrestle, one of these 3 won't even be in the finals. It should be a very good City League tournament all the way through. Some very solid kids throughout the weights should make for some very exciting finals matches.

I believe 130 lb. will play out like this:
1. - Tristen Deshazer 8. - ?
5. - ? 4. - ?
3. - Detmer or Hurd 6. - ?
7. - ? 2. - Detmer or Hurd
Tristen advances to the finals without breaking a sweat, except for his warm up.
Hurd and Detmer advance to the semi-finals.
I believe Detmer will control the tie-ups and tempo of the match with Hurd and advance to the finals in a very close match. I believe Detmer is more technically skilled and Hurd is more athletic.
If Detmer cannot control the tempo, Hurd wins to advance to the finals.
All three coaches are outstanding and will have their wrestlers prepared.

Ms. Jenni The discussion at the seeding meeting for this weight class will be lively and entertaining!! Someone may have to borrow one of Big Ed's arms to settle the matter!

All three coaches are outstanding and will have their wrestlers prepared. Is Daniel Munoz that bad if he is the Fourth Seed? Man... Three time Qualifier... 5th in the state 25-8 record in the toughest weight in the state. Last year Tristen pinned him and beat him 17-15. I think he broke a sweat! hmmmmmm....Richard... I am not predicting a finals appearance out of him, but he is not so bad that tristen wont even sweat. Last year, him and Hurd wrestled in the dual and he beat Hurd. Lets recap... I think the seed goes like this: Tristen Detmer Hurd Munoz but it's possible we go to the pill for the seed of Munoz and Hurd. We will see

So are you willing to make a prediction Harry? I think if keller and creekmore are on oppisite sides of the bracket they will meet in the finals but its hard to choose a winner.
