I can certainly see why you asked to get wrestle in match 58 instead of 98. Our family including our son would not want to wait the extra time that would take if an opportunity was there to wrestle earlier like that. I don't think anyone would find fault with you trying to save that much time on a weekend day for your family. I know my family would have pursued that too if we were in that situation.
From your opponent's view, I would say the issue may have been did he have ample opportunity to rest from his previous match. Sometimes the matches could be too close and a wrestler might not be properly rested. This situation happened one time to my son about four years ago. My son had just finished a match and he had an opportunity to wrestle his next match for third place immediately after due to a scratch. My son wanted to do it since he had a basketball game that afternoon that he wanted to make it to for the start of the game. I think his next opponent had just wrestled a couple of matches before him. They agreed but his dad was somewhat hestitant because of the short time rest interval. My son was a year older and won the match but I think his opponent's father regretted that they had wrestled too soon. I felt a little guilty about it later because I knew they really had wrestled too soon from their previous matches. He was very nice about it though. Perhaps your opponent's family felt that the extra time might help their wrestler compete better against your son.
