I know this may not be a topic of much intrests to some, but I thought I would get some opinions on if everyone agrees with the weight division in the 10U brackets. It is pretty standard until you hit 130 pounds, then it jumps to HVY. That is a major jump. Some tournaments and I believe subs, regionals and state, do put in a 150 bracket, but that is STILL a big difference. My son weighs 152-153 and he had to wrestled a kid this past weekend in Topeka that was 174 pounds! Last year he weighed 135 pounds and wrestled a kid all year that weighed 165 pounds....that is giving up 30 pounds!!! I think they should re-work the weight brackets for 10U. At this age you have many kids who are starting to really grow and 20-30 pound ifference is too much! I think a 140 bracket and 160 bracket should be added. What do you think?

At tournaments during the year they try to group kids the best they can. At qualifying Tournament this is the official weights.
9 & 10: 52, 55, 58, 61, 64, 67, 70, 73, 76, 79, 82, 85, 90, 95, 100, 110, 120, 130, 150, 170
p.s. If he weighs 174 then he should not be allowed to wrestle, he needed to loose 4 pounds. If your child looses 3 pounds he will have a better chance.
I don't know about a 140 & 160?

We gave him the option to lose the weight and go down, and he chose to stay up. He still beat the kid, but it scares me to see him go against someone that heavy.

My son is also 10 and just got down to 149 lbs. and is usually listed in the heavyweight division. I was glad there was a separation at 150 in Topeka. He has been wrestling much heavier kids. I enjoy watching him in the light heavyweight, it seems to even out the match. When he is in heavy weight matches, a lot of the time one kid will get the other down and then just lays on them to get the pin. When he wrestles kids more close to his weight you can see more moves.

I agree completely. Sometimes the bigger kids are not a better wrestler, but just lays on the other one to get the pin. But I guess if that is what the wrestling commission sets, we have to live with it.

He wrestled a kid from Wichita East first, Klingsproon (sorry I know I missed that one) and in the finals he wrestled Lorenzo Serna from Emporia. He had a first round bye.

Matt Klingsporn is from our club, my son practices with him. He has only beat him a few times in practice. At one tournament they wrestled each other all day. Just what I wanted to do, get up early to travel out of town to watch something I can see every night at home. But it was good practice for both of them. There is not enough kids in the weight class at many of the tournaments. Where are you wrestling this weekend? We will be in Andale.

I did see your son there...he is good. I told my son that he could give him a run for his money I thought. We will be at the Wichita tournament. I am bringing my son and another kid for the 150 division. He used to wrestler the 130 and gained weight, so now he is in 150.

I would say the fact that there are so few wrestlers in those weights answers your question.

You are correct, there are not alot of kids this size wrestling, we travel out of oklahoma to find kids to wrestle, your other option is to double enter even if your child may not be able to place every week this has helped mine alot(and yes you do worry about that mature 12 year old) but we did just fine, we will be coming to the classic on the 15th. 130lbs Oklahoma Outlaws

We are in the 150-Hvy weight division (depending how the tournament breakes it up). I understand that there are very few kids in the upper weight brackets, and breaking them up more would not be practicle, but I wonder if there would be more kids to wrestle if the brackets were not so broad? I have talked to a couple of parents of bigger kids who said their kid did not want to wrestle because he would be giving up 15-20 pounds to some of the other wrestlers. A very good wrestler missed 4 weeks worth of wrestling because he had it in his head that the weight difference was too much and he could not handle the wrestlers. He finally accepted if he wanted to wrestle he had to either lose the 2 pounds or go up, he went up and won the 150 division at Turner. Sometimes it is all a mind game.

I was just wondering how tall your son's are. Are they really developing, or is their body weight made up mostly of muscle mass or are they a little on the overweight side. Sometimes I don't think a 10 year old can make a good decision about losing 3 to 5 lbs to stay in a weight class or moving up to the next weight class and being able to gain another 20 lbs. My wrestler is 14 and under and wrestles at 100 lbs. We have gotten killed this year because he has not developed the muscle mass that the other boys have. (He is only 13) Right now he is weighing 96/97 lbs. The extra 2 lbs will come off of him when we cut out the candy and pop. I would imaging that 5 or 6 lbs would come off of your sons pretty easily by maybe just doing that. I am not suggesting that your kids eat to much, please don't get me wrong. But just a small change in diet can produce big results if you just give it a try.

My son is 5'6" and weighs 152-153 pounds. I think he could lose 3-5 pounds easily, but he is not much over-weight. I have a tough time convincing some people that he is only 10. At football state last year his age was challenged. I am not saying he is all muscle, he does have some table muscle too!! You do make a good point that just changing some of the kids' eating habits can drop 5 pounds or so. Actually at this age I think some kids' weight can change by 3-5 pounds over a week depending on how much Kool-aid and after school "snacks" at consumed. But I do not feel like my son is enough over-weight to put him on a diet, he is just a big kid over all. Hopefully someone who has seen him can back me up that he is not too overweight??!!??

My son has chosen on his own to lose a few pounds. I would never at his age (10) put him on a strict diet. He is very active and is on the move constantly. He quit eating sweets and now reads the labels on some of his favorite foods. If nothing else he has become more aware of a balanced diet. And the rest of the family has benefited too! I would just like to see him wrestle more kids his size.
