Five Cardinals win titles at annual LCC tournament

Five Labette Community College wrestlers captured titles at the annual Cameron Bradshaw Takedown Tournament Saturday.

"It was a good event," said coach Joe Renfro. "We had 188 wrestlers here competing, and of course we had five champions."

Sophomore Willy Pendleton took first at 152 pounds, repeating his finish at last year's tournament. Pendleton went on to finish ninth in nationals in 2006-07. Redshirt sophomore Joseph Cornejo took the title at 160 pounds, Mikey Morgan, also a redshirt sophomore, won at 168 pounds. Chance Rencountre took the title at 187 pounds. Redshirt freshman Ben Hohensee won in the unlimited division.

The takedown tournament is an unofficial event held each year to kick off the Labette wrestling season. Renfro, who won a national title with the Cardinals in 2005, looks to have a strong squad again this year. Morgan is ranked second in the country at 165 pounds by the NJCAA wrestling coaches. Pendleton is sixth at 149 pounds. Cornejo is ranked fourth at 157 pounds. Recountre is ranked fifth at 197 pounds. Joe Yust is ranked seventh at 184 pounds, and Hohensee is ranked eighth at 285 pounds.
