How is this tournament? I know it says that it is for 1st year wrestlers only, but how do they check. This is our sons 1st year wrestling and he will be there to wrestle in the 43 lb. category. Does anyone know of others who are tough in the 43lb. category that will be wrestling at this tournament?

we had a few who went last year and they siad it was a good day wrestling and the kids had fun. i am taking my 5 year old he wrestles 46 and my 8 year old who wrestles 52

We took our son his first year (it's his fourth year now) and it was a good tournament. We are taking our daughter, which this is her first year, and she wrestles 10 and under 64. I know our club is taking several of our first year wrestlers. The only one I know that is 6 and under 43lbs. is Zach Brautman.

dont worry about who is good for a first year wrestler. worry about your kid wanting to wrestle again next year. winning that tournament means nothing but learning and wanting to wrestle again is what its about. I do like the idea that they are making it for first year wrestlers only. Last year they wouldnt let my son wrestle cause it was his 2nd year and I looked at the brackets and 2 kids that beat my son were there. I heard it was a fun tournament from our first year kids last year though.

Bockman, my son won that tournament his first year & it still means a lot to him.

i didnt say it wouldnt mean anything to the kid. but to worry about who is good shouldnt be what anyone should be worrying about. thats my point of focus not about a first year kid winning.

Why not worry about winning? My son goes to practice 2-3 times a week and works on technique. He is always excited to go and never has to be told lets go. Do you think he wants to lose, (NO) has he lost (Yes). All we tell our son is did he try his best and did he have fun. So far he has always answered yes, even in defeat. We went to Maize and were put in a "A" bracket and lost both. Were we mad, No way. This is his first year wrestling and he was good enough to be in a "A" bracket, where they go by seeding.

I know its important to push, Having Fun, but my son likes to win.
It seems like, that everybody who knows my son, thinks that wrestling is the perfect sport for him and he is loving it.

And evidently by Cavanaugh's response this tournament meant a lot to him and his son.

will there be a list of participants?

It was a huge deal NewWrestlingDad, this was my son's first novice tournament ever. He had to wrestle open all year due to Church Committments & got his little butt kicked pretty good most of that year. Desire to win from the kid or the parents is not something that you have to pay your dues to have. I think that any parent that spends the time & money that most of us spend are crazy if they do not care if there kid wins expecially at the Novice Championship tournament in Derby. This is as level of a playing field that you will probably ever have in this sport IMO. Good luck

lol you people make me laugh. its the first year of a long long wrestling career. all i am saying as a coach and parent I personally would not focus on winning. I went through it. Yes its nice to see your kid win. Let me ask you a question. If your kid wins by falling on a kid because the other kid is week is that what you want. I didnt think so. What you want is for your kid to learn and get better. If that happens the winning will take care of itself. Winning should not be the focus for a coach or parent in a kids first year. Thats my opinion. You have yours. I just hope that your child is learning and winning with wrestling moves rather than just falling on top of another kid.

Winning matters. If it didn't we wouldn't ruin 6 and 8 year olds by teaching them the headlock, cow-catcher, and snake.

winning does not matter to me as a parent of a first year kid. thats all Im saying. By the way what is the snake. I have been around wrestling since I was 6 and I have never heard of that before. Was that your finishing move during all those state title years beeson.

Yes it was...I was the only three time state champion that did not know how to wrestle. That's why I'm making sure my kids know the correct way to wrestle.

thank you. that was the point I am trying to make about the first year wrestlers. I went through it with my son. He was 0-9 going into the andover tournament his first year. He won all three matches and placed first. That was where we ended the year. We kept going to practice but didnt wrestle any other tournaments. This is his 3rd year and he is winning but not always winning with wrestling moves. I do catch him throwing the headlock alot. My rule in practice is he cannot throw a headlock from his feet during practice cause I want him to learn how to wrestle. I didnt have what he has now. I want that with all these kids not just my own. He likes winning but I like to watch him learn and progress. I like to see him win but by actually wrestling and not relying on the headlock all the time. If anyone has any suggestions on how to help break him of this please help me. Thank you. Once again thank you Beeson. You are full of knowledge and I feel your really helpful with all kids and not just your own. I see you coach other kids at these tournaments and think some of the parents and coaches need to learn a little from coaches as yourself.

What is a snake? And why do they call the cow-catcher a cow-catcher?

funny that you say that. when our coach was teaching that move for our open kid wrestlers I walked over and asked what he was showing. I thought it was the lateral drop but its a little different. Its basically underhooks and your torque the wrestler one way or the other. Its a strength move. A move I was never tought but did it without knowing what it was. Many years ago. I still dont know what the snake is. Its probably something I also used without knowing what it was.

The Snake: also called The Bulldog and The Head and Arm - From the front headlock position keep one arm on the head grasping the chin, the other arm goes to an underhook and then the wrestler torques his opponent to his back.

I know what a cow cather is, but don't know why it is called a cow catcher. I'm gonna guess a snake is what our club calls a bulldog.

I assume its called the cow catcher because a steer wrestler uses the same type of move to throw the steer to the ground before roping it.
