Stanford Names Captains/2007-08 Cardinal Season Preview

From Stanford Sports Information

Tanner Gardner, Josh Zupancic, Phillip Doerner and Luke Feist will lead the Cardinal this season.

The Stanford wrestling program has named its 2007-08 captains announced Head Coach Kerry McCoy today. Senior Tanner Gardner, senior Josh Zupancic, senior Phillip Doerner and junior Luke Feist have been voted by their teammates to lead the Cardinal for the upcoming season.

Gardner, one of three fifth year seniors on the 2007-08 squad, begins his third season as a Cardinal captain. The 125-pounder from Berryton, Kans. earned his second All-America honor with a seventh place finish at the NCAA Championships last season, and will look to become Stanford’s first three-time All-American this year. Gardner, the defending Pac-10 Champion, also set a school record with 42 wins last year and became just the fourth wrestler in program history to join the 100-career-win club.

A look at the 2007-08 Cardinal

Stanford begins the 2007-08 campaign in senior Tanner Gardner’s home state of Kansas, meeting Fort Hays State for a dual meet on Nov. 9. The team will then compete in two tournaments, the Central Missouri State Open and the Fullerton Open, before taking on San Francisco State in San Francisco on Nov. 21.

Following is a look at the 2007-08 Cardinal by weight class:

125
Two-time All-American Tanner Gardner will be the anchor of the 2007-08 team, returning for his fifth year with an arsenal of experience. Gardner has been to the NCAA Championships three times, and is the defending Pac-10 Champion. He became just the second two-time All-American in program history last season and is determined to become Stanford’s first three-time All-American in March. He won a school record 42 matches in 2006-07 and became just the fourth wrestler in program history to join the 100 career win club. Yet, going into his final collegiate season, Gardner has just one goal in mind- an NCAA title. Consistently ranked among the nation’s top-five last year, the Berryton, Kans. native and his coach know that he has the potential to become Stanford’s second all-time NCAA Champion.

“Tanner is one of those special kids that you only see every few years,” said McCoy. “He is truly the total package: a great person, a great student and a great wrestler. He has done everything possible to put himself in a position to become the most successful wrestler to ever put on a Stanford singlet. It’s going to be bittersweet going through this season, because with all of the success he’s going to have, it’s going to be his last year.”

Stanford Splits First Night Of Pac-10 Duals

Cardinal tops UC Davis for the first time since 2004.

Jan. 18, 2008

Davis, Calif. - Seniors Josh Zupancic and Tanner Gardner paced the Stanford wrestling team, as the squad split its first two Pac-10 duals at Hickey Gym on the campus of UC Davis. The Cardinal dropped an exciting battle with Boise State, 21-15, before topping the host Aggies for the first time since 2004, 30-9.

Zupancic upset the top-ranked wrestler in the Pac-10, before working for a decisive technical fall in his second match. Gardner picked up two wins, including his 14th pin of the year.

The first dual played out in a series of tight decisions, with seven of nine bouts determined by three points or less. Boise State came out on top of six of the close bouts, however, to top Stanford in its first Pac-10 competition of the year, 21-15.

The Cardinal fell behind early, dropping decisions in the first three matches of the night. In the first, at 184 pounds, the Broncos' ninth-ranked Kirk Smith topped Stanford sophomore Zack Giesen (17-6), 5-2. In the second, Boise State 197-pounder Matt Casperson scored a takedown in the final seconds of the third period to edge sophomore Jake Johnson, 3-2. In the third, heavyweight Nick Smith's takedown with time winding down lifted him to a 3-1 decision over the Cardinal's Phillip Doerner.

With Boise State up 9-0, the 125-pound Gardner finally halted the Bronco momentum. The defending Pac-10 Champion pinned Boise State's Anthony Hayes in 5:35. Gardner took a solid lead on Hayes, then put him on his back in the third period. The pin was Gardner's 14th of the year, matching the career-best total he racked up last season.

Boise State followed with two more close decisions, boosting its lead to 15-6. Wrestling in his first collegiate dual, freshman Porfirio Madrigal fell 5-3 to Cory Fish at 133 pounds. Fellow freshman Max Rosefigura dropped a tight 2-1 decision to Elijah Hutchinson, after the Bronco 141-pounder scored a late third period reversal.

Stanford earned six points on a Boise State forfeit at 149 pounds.

In the most anticipated bout of the night, Zupancic pulled off his second upset of a top-10 wrestler this month. The Cardinal senior scored a two-point nearfall in the third period, upending 10th-ranked Tyler Sherfey, 3-1. Zupancic, who is No. 13 nationally, earned his 24th win of the season and tied the team score at 15.

The Broncos closed out the win, however, with another pair of close decisions at 165 pounds and 174 pounds. Sophomore Peter Miller dropped a 5-2 decision to 18th-ranked Kurt Swartz in the first bout. In a rematch of last year's Pac-10 174-pound third place match, Luke Feist fell 10-3 to Boise State's Nate Lee.

Stanford was given a six-point boost to start the dual with UC Davis, taking an early lead on an Aggie forfeit at 184 pounds. Johnson (18-8) then padded the Cardinal lead at 197 pounds, defeating UC Davis' Abe Otrambo, 5-2.

The Aggies bounced back with an overtime victory at heavyweight, trimming the margin to 9-3. Doerner (15-13) and the Aggies' Ricky Alcala were knotted 1-1 at the end of regulation, but Alcala scored a sudden victory takedown to earn the win.

Gardner (27-1) once again answered for the Cardinal, dominating 2007 NCAA qualifier Marcos Orozco in the 125-pound bout. The Stanford senior tallied six near fall points and claimed an 11-1 major decision to shoot the Stanford lead into double-digits, 13-3.

UC Davis rallied back with wins at 133 pounds and 141 pounds, however, slicing the lead to just four at 13-9. Madrigal (5-7) fell to Aggie senior Francisco Manriquez, 10-4, at 133 pounds while Rosefigura (9-7) was reversed in the final seconds of the bout to fall 9-5 to Nexi Delgado at 141 pounds.

Redshirt freshman Lucas Espericueta (19-7) put the Cardinal back in control, taking care of UC Davis' Barett Abel with a 12-2 major decision. Zupancic (25-5) then stepped in and sealed the win for the Cardinal, dominating Drew Maraglia at 157 pounds with a decisive 19-4 technical fall.

Miller (13-7) continued the trend, posting his first career technical fall at 165 pounds. The sophomore scored seven points in the first period to best Aggie Kyle Dubs, 17-2.

At 174 pounds, Feist battled back from an early deficit and put an exclamation point on the Stanford win with a 9-6 decision over UC Davis' Tyler Bernacchi.

Stanford returns to the mats next week for its first home action of the year. The Cardinal will meet 2007 Pac-10 runner-up Cal State Bakersfield in a 7 p.m. dual Thursday night. On Friday, Stanford will battle Menlo College and conference foe Portland State in a pair of contests starting at 5 p.m.

Cardinal Gets Best of Ducks in Eugene, 24-15

Stanford now has 11 wins on the year, its highest total in more than three decades.

Feb. 1, 2008

Eugene, Ore. - In his Oregon homecoming, sophomore Zack Giesen picked up his 20th win of the year and helped the Cardinal to a 24-15 win over the Oregon Ducks at McArthur Court in Eugene, Ore. The Cardinal improves to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the Pac-10.

Stanford's 11 wins are the second most in program history, and the most in more than three decades. The Cardinal must win its remaining four duals to match the program record (15) set in 1974-75.

The dual was close early on, with the teams trading the first seven bouts. Stanford's upper weights strung together three consecutive wins, however, to lead the team to victory.

Senior Tanner Gardner (31-1) started the evening off strong at 125 pounds, putting Oregon's Joey Lucas on his back in 1:37 to earn his career-best 16th pin of the year. The Berryton, Kans. native, who has 31 wins on the year, is just two pins short of the program's single-season pin record, and five wins short of the program's career win record.

The Cardinal will be back on the mats again Sunday at 1 p.m. to close out its Oregon road trip. The team takes on defending Pac-10 Champion Oregon State at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore.

Stanford 24, Oregon 15
125 - No. 6 Tanner Gardner (S) pinned Joey Lucas (O), 1:37

Cardinal Suffers Tough Loss At Oregon State, 24-15

Stanford drops four of final five bouts and picks up third loss of the year.

Feb. 3, 2008

Corvallis, Ore. - In a hotly contested dual at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore., the Cardinal wrestling team suffered its third loss of the year at the hands of the Oregon State Beavers, 24-15. Stanford held the lead for the better part of the dual, but lost four of the final five bouts to allow the defending Pac-10 Champion to come out on top. Stanford falls to 11-3 overall and 4-2 in the Pac-10 with the loss.

Tanner Gardner (32-1) earned the Cardinal a quick five points in the first match, as the sixth-ranked senior overwhelmed the Beavers' Jake Gonzales at 125 pounds. Gardner put Gonzales on his back in each of the first two periods, and finished with a 17-2 technical fall. With his 134th career victory, the two-time All-American moved within four wins of the Stanford career win record.

Stanford will continue Pac-10 dual action on Friday, when the squad takes on the Cal Poly Mustangs in San Luis Obispo at 7 p.m. The team returns home on Sunday for its Senior Day dual against the nationally-ranked Cal State Fullerton Titans. Sunday's action begins at 1 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.

Stanford Falls To No. 24 Cal State Fullerton, 25-17

The Cardinal will finish out the regular season at Arizona State next week.

Feb. 10, 2008

Stanford, Calif. - In the final contest on the Farm for the 2007-08 Cardinal wrestling team, the No. 24 Cal State Fullerton Titans came out on top, besting Stanford, 25-17. The Cardinal falls to 12-4 with the loss and 5-3 in the Pac-10.

Seniors Tanner Gardner and Josh Zupancic made the most of their Stanford home finales, combining for 11 of the 17 Stanford points. Junior Luke Feist picked up the other Stanford win, pinning his second opponent of the year in the first period.

Tanner Gardner pinned his 17th opponent of the year in the loss.

Gardner (34-1) kept the Cardinal alive with a win by fall at 125 pounds, putting Andre Gonzalez on his back in 2:50 to narrow the Stanford deficit to just four points. The pin was Gardner's 17th of the year, just one short of the program's single-season record. Gardner is just two wins short of matching Matt Gentry's career win record set in 2005 (138).

Stanford will wrap up the regular season next week in Tempe, Ariz., battling Arizona State next Sunday at noon. The Pac-10 Championships will be hosted by the University of Oregon in Eugene this year, Mar. 2-3.

Gardner Shatters Two Records; Heads To Pac-10 Title Match
March 2, 2008

Tanner Gardner is now the program's all-time win leader.
Eugene, Ore. - In one fell swoop, senior 125-pounder Tanner Gardner shattered two Stanford records, becoming the winningest wrestler in program history and its single-season pin leader all at once. Gardner posted his second pin of the day to advance to his third consecutive Pac-10 title match, leading the Cardinal squad in the first day of action at the 2008 Pac-10 Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Gardner tied both records in his opening match, securing his 18th pin of the year and his 138th career win with a win by fall over Cal State Fullerton's Andre Gonzalez (1:52). In the championship semifinal, he slapped another opponent to the mat to smash both records, putting Marcos Orozco of UC Davis on his back in 4:03. With the win, Gardner secured a spot in tomorrow night's 125-pound title bout and guaranteed himself a fourth trip to the NCAA Championships.

Gardner (37-1), the top-seeded wrestler in the tournament and the nation's sixth-ranked 125-pounder, will wrestle Arizona State's Anthony Robles in the championship bout tomorrow. Gardner is looking to become Stanford's first repeat Pac-10 Champion in more than two decades. His 139 career wins top the former career record set by Matt Gentry in 2005, while his 19 pins this year best the single-season record set by Chris Horpel more than three decades ago.
