my wife just got done figuring what we have spent this wrestling season, and just wanted to know if its about what you other family's have spent, i know some of you have spent a lot for other state tournaments.
after 14 tournaments, fee's gas, hotel rooms wrestling gear and such. the total she came up with is right around $4,800.00
that also includes topeka, and districks this week end, so that will bring the total to 16 tournaments, 17 if we make it to state.
now is that about what all others spend, i wish my wife would not save every da- invoice to tally up. we figure around 300.00 a weekend if we have to travel.

I try to keep it at 400.00 per month nix, I storngly recommend keeping a slush fund, I siphon 100.00 every 2 weeks to my account named "wrestling"!

Guys, you are traveling into dangerous territory. To be honest I try not to think about. The same reason I never keep track of how much I spend on "Adult Beverages". And if I did either, I would never ever show my wife!!!

now your thinking! Until little nix gets involved with freestyle/greco, then there is camps. Bottom line, it is a vicious circle. I never catch up. As soon as I think I'm back in the black theres football season!! I guess I could be spending he money on less worthy causes.

Hey Nix, when I saw your post, I was wondering how you spent that much. Then my wife and I got to talking about expenses for the season. We have had to take two cars to most tournaments. She coaches volleyball on the weekends as well as trying to keep up with the kiddo wrestling. Between the two we have spent ALOT of money. It's crazy, but it's also worth it. I wish I hadn't gotten on this post, because now I know what my parents spent on me. I know at that time they couldn't afford that, but came up with it so I could do what I loved.

I have never even thought about tallying up how much we spend. Of course, we haven't done hotels and I try and pack a pretty good cooler. I have my kids pretty well trained on the concession stands - we try to stay away!! We did have to go to Sirloin Stockade in Ottawa though. My kids think it is THE best one they have ever been to! Gas has been the biggest expense so far this year.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't change it for anything. I just never realized how much we spend every week. That isn't my job. If it was I would spend more, as I don't save well at all. I have my wife to thank for that.

You have to look at it as paying for your kids college scholarship. nothing is free.

if we travel to or around wichita it's around 140.00 in fuel, 70.00 for a motel room, food 50.00 for 4 of us if not more, plus tourny fee's, last week was dodge and ottawa, this week topeka and hays. the following week topeka if little nix makes it past districts. adds up fast.
some times we get a break, mom lives in arkcity, sister lives in haysville, the kids like motel's so thats what we usally do.
so as long as the family enjoy's it and little nix. i will continue on being broke the rest of my life.

It cost almost $1500 to heat the Wrestling Barn this winter. We are going to have to have a fund raiser!! If I was looking for a way to pay for college I would have stayed at home and played Nintendo or something for the past 10 years. If I added up everything we have spent on wrestling for this time on three boys, tournaments, teams, practice travel, etc I could send all of them to Harvard! That is if they could get accepted When it is all over with I can say I spent nearly every weekend with my kids when they were growing up. To me that is priceless!

Not sure if this would work for all clubs, but our club this year had a fund raiser for kids, which we did breakfast burritos, most of the burrito supplies were donated from area businesses, and the money that the kids raised went into a fund for them and that is what paid for their tournaments, I think it went really well. Just a thought. Seemed to save a little money.

my wrestler is the youngest of 5. If I added up what was spent on him and his sisters activites: wrestling, bastketball, baseball, football, soccer, track, swimteam, gymnastics, dance, drama team, art classes, softball, piano, guitar, flute, clainet and trumpet... WOW. I could live in one of the nicest houses in the county if I had saved all that $. Instead, I have 5 well rounded, active, healthy kids! 3 of them scholarshipped: 1 for dance (as a math major), 1 for art (as a math major), and 1 for track and dance (as a math major). Is it worth it? YES! My youngest is definitely my most expensive. He wants to do all his own things PLUS what his sisters did (except dance LOL). Money is tight for everyone. But be careful you don't let the kids know too much if you are stressing about it. If they feel guilty about what you are spending on them, it will reverse everything you are doing it for.

what ever it cost the kids are worth it but at the same time I think this is one reason numbers are down and yet in our area the tournaments are down. Can you belive the cost of water in a 16oz bottle/ any wheres from 1.00 at a small tournament to 2.50 at bigger tournaments. Then you have the cost of gas and food and everything else, plus the entry frees are going up. I think wrestling may price people to take a new look at how to control the ever riseing cost of the sport.

I do not even want to start adding the money up . . . the way I look at it is that everything costs $$ and right now I am spending money to spend quality time with my kids when we take off to these tournaments. Quality time to do something that the boys enjoy and they are not sitting in front of the tv or playing video games!! (That might have been cheaper but hopefully these are family times that the boys will enjoy and remember for years to come!!)
