Yes, this tournament was won by an out of state team...but Auburn is the preseason number two ranked Class B team in the state of Nebraska, with 7 returning state qualifiers and 4 returning medalists. They looked sound physically, fundamentally and technically...a well coached team. You make it sound like no one from out of state should be worthy of winning. All of these kids that participated wrestled to win, and at the end of the day the best team and wrestlers won. It doesn't mean our kids are behind the times, it just means they have to work harder to be the the best they can be by the end of the year, which is the time to be the best.

Sabetha is to be congratulated for inviting a quality out-of-state participant to their tournament. As is often stated on this forum in some form or another, even if you lose, wrestling a quality opponent only makes you better.

We read on this forum about how Kansas' competition rules restricts our ability to seek out better competition; perhaps we could/should all think a little more "roundly" and invite more out-of-state and/or out-of-area schools to take part in our tournaments.

Just a thought.

Always better to go against the best. You may get your butt kicked sometimes but it will help you out better in the long run. Man up State of Kansas!!

Wow, I have never seen my little ole tournament get so much publicity, I guess if you want to see how good Auburn is this year-go wrestle them. Coach Oilver has a quality program with a huge kids program, an a stellar weight program, his teams are always tough! Besides the fact his kid is a beast at 140 his whole team is very physical an tough on their feet-too bad they are in the same class as Omaha-Skut!

I am glad that my young freshman did as well as they did, it is hard to have such a young squad but it is fun too.

We try to invite as many quality out-of-state teams as possible, that is why it is called the Tri-State tournament. We have had many good teams from Missouri, Nebraska, an Iowa make the trip to wrestle here. Anyone who has the second weekend in December open an lives within the travel area-we would love to have you!

An yes it speaks volumes about wrestling that all the coaches voted unanimously for Nick to be the OW, he is an amazing young man. Best of luck to him an Coach Cathcart an the rest of the Wamego team, I am glad they came to Sabetha this year!

I kept looking for a 1st place finisher to see what weight the outstanding wrestler was , ..Am I correct in that he was the 3rd place finisher at 171 lbs ? How did a wrestler who got 3rd place get voted unanimously the OW ? This usually isn't the case. thanks for posting the results Coach Brown and again for being a ranker. Best of Luck with your young team this year.

The young man who won the MOW at the Sabetha Tournament was Nick Hartwick of Wamego. This young man has a crippling disability that does not keep him from wanting to compete against his peers in a sport that always brings out the best of a young man. Over the last three years, although i am not a resident of Wamego, every time this young man takes the mat, i root for him because i believe he demonstrates what sports are all about...competing against your peers, no matter if you win or lose. In my opinion Nick deserved the Most Outstanding Wrestler of this tournament, and i wish him all the best in the future.

The 3rd place finisher at 171 was Chris Hartwick.
Nick Hartwich went 0-2 at 130 but I think it was his effort and his attitude he shows on and off the mat that the coaches voted for. And he has an amazing 4.3 GPA.

Kudos to the coaches for selecting Nick Hartwich as the OW for the tournament. I have seen Nick wrestle several times and I will say that young man has more guts and courage than many adults that I know. What an inspiration to all of us! Just a reminder for all of us; next time you are feeling down or having a bad day, put yourself in that young man's shoes. Congrats Nick and good luck in the future!

Yes, Nick is an amazing indvidual and a fine young man, I was inspired by him as was my team. We (the coaches) felt that we didn't even have to vote, all agreed he deserved it.

I was fortunate enough last year to have a young man on my middle school team with downs syndrome, he wrestled against his peers and they always let him win. At the end of every match he would run an jump into my arms, it is a feeling that brings goose pimples to my felsh even now.

This is what makes our sport so special, those atheltes who otherwise would not get a chance to compete, are regarded with the highest respect on a wrestling mat(Kyle Manard for example). This is one of the best things about wrestling, we accept everyone!

Best of luck to all on the break, have a great holidays and a safe new year!

Where is Mr. Cokeley now? Yet another undeserving OW right?

From what I've read over the past few months you really have nothing good to say about KS wrestling as a whole, but rather would pick it apart for not being something you wish it to be.

Our kids are just as good as any in the nation and we don't have to travel to prove it. Look at our placings at Fargo, Senior Nationals, etc. and it will speak for itself.

In your no-one is as good as they should be attitude, I hope this thread will maybe open you eyes to the fact it's not always about being the best wrestler but better yet the better person or role model. Your constant complaining doesn't set the best example in the eyes of those who read here. I once was that way, I have since grown up and moved on. Maybe you should move on and accept Kansas wrestling for what it is and what is done for the children of this state as a whole.

Alex - Your example of the Kansas wrestlers placing at Fargo, Senior Nationals, etc.. does speak for itself, you are correct. We do have kids that are as good as many in the nation.

If you will take those names and research the years back in "out of state/national level tournaments, and on Kansas National teams" guess what you will see? A majority of those same names. Wonder how they continued to improve to the level of placing at Fargo? They started wrestling the best competition they could as early as they could - OUTSIDE THE FOUR CORNERS OF KANSAS.

Friday I went to the 1st day of the Eudora tournament. It was full of wrestlers that were on the middle school duals team(s) that my son competed in and was organized by Cokely. So, keep in mind, these are the Freshmen and Sophmores competing in a very tough tournament. The results were that these Freshman and Sophmores were very impressive. I beleive every single one of them placed in the top 4, and several were champions. They had already been exposed to top level competition, pressure, nerves, etc.. High school was less of an adjustment for them, and I beleive it allows them to perform at a higher level with far less "shock" at the experience/skill of the Jr.s/Sr.s.

While I dont agree with several of Will's proposals, I can tell you I do beleive he is dead-on on this one. You do get better finding the best competition whenever/wherever possible.

(And, actually is doesnt really even need a reply, but as far as wondering why he hasnt stated this wrestler is undeserving... even though you dont know him, I do know you and you are definitely smarter than that. I would suggest that there is NO-ONE that would not have supported this young mans selection, even "Lucifer" Cokely.) smile

I think a lot of you missed the point in Will's reply. I think the point he was trying to make is that other states allow their teams to travel in order to get the best competition.

His point is that it would be nice if we could do the same. I have been following these threads and understand the different points of view but I don't understand why schools (if they can afford it) can't go to tournaments wherever they want.

As to where is Cokeley now.....I would venture to guess that he is busy organizing another trip, tournament, or opportunity for the Kansas wrestlers. Just like he did this past weekend for the Park Hill duals, this past summer for the Middle School Duals, etc.

One doesn't always have to agree with Will's ideas but you have to respect the time and effort he gives to the Kansas wrestling community.

I agree with Shawn's comments. I think Will puts in a tremendous amount of time for the betterment of Kansas wrestlers. I don't see a lot of others putting in the time and energy that Will does.
