Wrestling people,
Ok all now that the season is over I have been doing a little number crunching(not my strong point), some of you might find it interesting. Besides it is now the doldrum of the year!
I correctly ranked 10 out of the 14 State Champions in 321-A this year. As far as my percentage of placers, I am happy to say that I recieved a C-, or 71.43%. That is a pretty good percentage! I thank all of you who helped me with this years rankings and the words of support. I had many people approach me this weekend in Hays an thank me, you made the job worth-while!
Now for another little factoid...the regional placement percentages are as follows Ellis-27/84 or 32% Beloit-24/84 or 29% Burlington-17/84 or 20% Garden Plain-16/84 or 19%
Hope all are looking forward to the upcoming Kids Fed and Freestyle/Greco season.

We drove the 2 1/2 hours to Beloit when we could have just as easily have driven the 2 hours to Burlington....life just hands you a crap sandwhich sometimes. But there is really no way to seperate the teams to make the regionals all 25%, thats just impossible. Unless some of those Western Kansas kids want to move to Sabetha!

Those numbers look amazingly good compared to 20 years ago. Each 3-2-1A Regional has almost 20% of the medals.
I wish that I could find some of my numbers from the early 90's when I first got to Norton. Brady Beek ,then coach at Hill City, made a nice proposal to the KWCA and KSHSAA on how to divide the regionals in order to get more parity. I know I still have them.
Now Brown, work on this. Since 3-2-1A State was, In my opinion, a wild tourn. with many upsets. And many others that "almost" got upset.
How many former State medalists, went home empty handed in 2009. I know of 3, just on my team.

Ask and ye shall recieve Billy!
Previous state placers not placing this year in 321-A 119 Brockelman 4th in 08' @112 Galloway 5th in 08' @ 112 125 Unruh 6th in 08' @ 112 130 Keiswetter 6th in 08' @119 Schneider 6th in 08' @ 125 135 Keiswetter 3rd in 08' @ 125 140 Gantz 3rd in 08' @140 152 Gentry 6th in 08' @ 152
8 former placers, at one of the craziest state tourneys I have ever been to, did not make it to the medals. That is what makes this sport such a gut check. Reminds me of a young fellow from Wichita Indp. that was a St. Champ one year and beat out the next.

And the next question, since you got on that one pretty quick. How many former state placers did not even qualify for state.

Contrarian, The balance among regionals this year was among the best it has ever been. "Back in the day,, esp. in the 90's, it was not unusual that 50% or more of the state medalists came from the far western regional.
In 1996 I made a presentation to the KSHSAA Executive Board with the numbers in support of a request that the KSHSAA look at how the regional tournaments were divided. I will look for the report and if I find it will post the numbers. They were crazy at that time. It was not unusual that multiple weight classes had 4 of 6 placers being from the far west regional.

I remember a year, not long ago, where Smith Center, Lincoln, Osborne, Stockton, Plainville and a few others went West. It was ridiculous! The balance is a little better now, with those teams in "second west regional".

I myself do not understand though how a team that is less than 45 miles from Mo., and less than 7 miles from Neb. ends up in the "second west regional". I am not complaining but it seems to me that in the era of budget cuts, this was more expensive for Sabetha than other schools at our regional. KSHSAA will have to take that into consideration next year. There is almost no way to make the medal percentages closer till we in the East can build the kind of support those western schools have, we are trying every year!
As far as those that did not make state I am going to pass, my wife wants to know why I am still looking over brackets since the season is over. She is tired of highschool wrestling for this year, I dont blame her, I'll do it when she isn't looking-------- perhaps!

In 1998 Phillipsburg hosted a tough western regional. A school from the north central part of the state not usually assigned out here was sent west and there were several wrestlers on the team with very good records. Not one of them qualifed for state. The coach was in the hospitality room after the consolation semi-finals and he asked no one in particular, "what am I going to say to my kids and their parents?" Someone from the west responded "the same thing we tell our kids and parents every year!"
the regional at Norton in 2004 was incredible; 8 of the top ten ranked teams and 40% of the ranked wrestlers were entered.
So this year the regional balance was better than it has been in the past.

I started this post more interested in how well I did compared to the other rankers in terms of percentage than starting an argument about regional disparity. I think the numbers for regionals were fine this year,my earlier commment was about geography not ability level of the regional.
I don't beleive Sabetha is considered north-central, but Burlington was almost as far away as Beloit so 6 one way, half a dozen the other!

I agree that the regional balance this year in regards to the outcome at State was much better; reasons as to why it was seemed appropriate.

Coach Brown...what was even more bizarre than Sabetha at the Beloit Regional was Wabaunsee participating at Beloit. Now, that's a drive!

Browns The Garden Plain Regional only had 13 placers. Did you throw the Hoisington kids into this regional because they wrestled at Ellis?

I stand corrected I did add the Hosington kids to the wrong regional, that makes it a little more skewed at the Garden regional.
