Our family has helped run tournaments for over 5 years now and every year - there will be some group or club that is upset by something. I know how hard it is to run a tournament. I understand how frustrating it can get for the people AND the volunteers when things get hectic. Because of this, you will NEVER see me complain vocally about how a tournament was ran.
As for the mat size and kids fleeing, I agree that no matter how big a mat is, you will still see wrestlers who do this. Watch a high school tournament and notice how many of the wrestlers ona full-size mat will wrestle "right on the edge". Some of it is strategy (ie, if you get in a bad position, it's easier to get out of bounds and be reset). There are high school coaches who teach their wrestlers to use this strategy and there are many who will tell a wrestler to "look at where they are" or to "get out of bounds". It's a strategy and it does work (unless your opponent knows what you are trying to do and pulls you back in which also happens in many cases). Sometimes, going out of bounds is just the situation the two wrestlers are in. Other times, it is intentionally fleeing the mat. But I can guarantee you that good refs can tell the difference between a kid who is fleeing the mat intentionally and the ones who are not.
