The 197 bracket in the Elite division just had a string of Kansas guys battle it out. Marrs beat Strawn. Rencountre (FHSU and former Labette guy) beat Edison. Then Strawn beat Rencountre. Rencountre is having a good showing (wrestling for 5th) for being out a year. That will beef up the FHSU team!

Couple of Kansans CornHuskers - Tyler Koehn and C.J. Napier at the Kaufman-Band Open Huskers at Kaufman-Brand Open Omaha - Sophomore Tucker Lane was named Most Outstanding Wrestler and led three Huskers to individual crowns as Nebraska claimed six top-three finishes at the Kaufman-Brand Open at Omaha's Sapp Fieldhouse on Saturday. Lane's 285-pound title was his second in a row at the Kaufman-Brand Open, winning all four of his matches by decision, including a narrow 3-2 victory over Iowa's Brad Rasing in the championship. In addition to Lane, sophomore Chris Hacker claimed the 149-pound Elite Division title, using three major decision wins before an 8-4 victory in the championship over Luther's Jason Pyle. Freshman C.J. Napier earned Nebraska's final title in the 133-pound Amateur Division with a 3-2 victory over Minnesota's David Thorn in the title match. All five of Napier's matches were won by decision. Husker freshmen performed very well, as two more reached the championship finals in their respective classes with Tyler Koehn and Caleb Kolb each earning runner-up finishes. Koehn won his first three matches by decision in the 165-pound Elite Division, before falling to Old Dominion's Chris Brown in the finals, while Kolb used two major decision triumphs en route to the title match, where he was defeated by Minnesota's Kevin Steinhaus, 3-2. A total of four NU freshmen finished in the top three, as David Klingsheim won the consolation final in the 125-pound Amateur Division, 8-3, over Chadron State's Dustin Stodola. Nebraska wrestling is in action again Sunday as senior All-Americans Jordan Burroughs (157), Craig Brester (197) and Stephen Dwyer (184) are all set to take part in the 44th annual NWCA All-Star Classic in Fullerton, Calif. The trio is among 20 participants invited to the prestigious event. -------------- Mike Flynn

My boy Nick had a long day in Omaha wrestling 8 matches SDSU at Kauffman Brand Open OMAHA, Neb. - The South Dakota State wrestling team took home two championships and two fifth-place finishes at the Kaufman/Brand Open Saturday night. The tournament was hosted by the University of Nebraska-Omaha and is one of the largest wrestling tournaments in the nation. Ninth rated (Intermat) Tyler Sorenson continued his rampant pace taking home the 197-pound title in the Elite Division. Sorenson won his first two matches by fall before battling through a pair of decisions, including a 10-9 decision over Jacob Marrs of UNO in the championship. Sorenson improves his overall record to 12-2 on the season, winning his second tournament title of the season. Also in the Elite Division, Aaron Pickrel grabbed a fifth-place finish with a 7-5 decision over Pat Hunter Iowa Central Community College. Pickrel won his first two matches before falling in the championship bracket. He then lost in wrestlebacks before defeating Hunter. Pickrel has a team-high 14 wins on the season to only four loses. Dustin Walraven took home a first-place finish in the Amateur Division at 141 pounds. Walraven compiled a 4-0 record, winning three matches by decision and one by fall. He defeated Bart Reiter, unattached from the University of Minnesota, 3-2 in the championship match. Walraven improves to 10-3 overall. In the 157-pound Amateur Division, Nick Flynn earned a fifth-place finish with a win over Tyler Kottas of UNO by a 3-2 decision. Flynn won his first match by fall in 43 seconds before dropping into wrestlebacks where he won four matches in a row on his way to fifth place. Overall at the tournament, Flynn posted a 6-2 record and is now 11-6 this season. Also competing for the Jacks in the Elite Division was Weston Blasius who went 0-2 on the day. In the Amateur Division, Tyler Johnson (0-2), Nick Hagar (0-2), Ted Kruger (1-2), Joe Rasmussen (2-2) and Bryce Drefke (2-2) also competed. The Jacks return to the mat over the Thanksgiving Break at the Indian Duals where they will take on Indiana, Northern Illinois, Cal State-Fullerton, Liberty and Tennessee Chattanooga. ---------- Mike Fynn

Holtons Kansas' Jesse Strawn had quite a home town cheering sectoin at the open and took 3rd. Jesse Strawn and Old Dominion OMAHA, Neb. - Senior's Kyle Hutter and Chris Brown paced the Old Dominion wrestling team Saturday evening by winning their weight classes at the Kaufman/Brand Open in Omaha, Neb. Hutter, Brown, Joe Budi and Jesse Strawn all placed for the Monarchs in the elite division. In the Amateur Division, six different Monarchs placed and John Nicholson won his weight class. Budi, ranked No. 16 by Intermat, picked up two wins at 184-pounds to garner a fourth-place finish and No. 8 Strawn claimed third-place at 197-pounds with a 4-1 record. The Monarchs will next be in action on November 28 when they compete at the Mat Town Open in Lock Haven, Pa. ----- Was hoping to see SDSU's #9 Tyler Soreson and #8 Jesse Strawn head to head. Strawn meet up with Kansan and UNO Jacob Marrs in the semis with Marrs winning 9-5. Marrs had a great first period against Sorenson in the finals, but the Soro tilt machine was too much for Marrs in the second and third period. Mike Flynn
