ENGLISH 101: the use of the word a instead of an, is correct in this case, because older, and less intoxicated are adjectives to describe the noun version. you wouldn't say AN version.
Can you cite a reference for this? Off the top of my head I am going to disagree with you. I will search for a reference however.
