Tommy was 6/under last year & i think 43, he wrestles 52 now weighing 50.5.

Jon,

Are the weights in order, small typo, or did he really go 46, 67, 64, 58, 58?

So much variance out there. Especially this year, our youngest took a huge growth spurt and we have outgrown everyone we used to wrestle. He went from 43, 49, 55, 61, and 80 this year. I thought he would easily drop back to 76 once practice started but we are struggling to keep him at 80. He's still 8&U so don't want to jump all the way to 88 but you can't stop a growth spurt! Guess he's catching up to his brother who has always been a big boy. Started out 95, skipped a year, then 120, 140, and now 165 at 12&U.

Bo started at 5 and went 46,49,52,58,61,70,76,84,90,100,112 as a 15 year old Soph. He has grown 5 inches in the last year. He certified at 103 the first day of practice and weighed about 112. Now two months later he weighs about 118 and has moved up to wrestle 112. That's is six pounds in two months. We used to go for a year and only gain that. When it's time, it's time.

Garrett has followed a similar path starting at age 6: 49,52,55,61,67,68/72,76/80,85 and 95 this year. It is looking like 103 his Freshman year barring a huge growth spurt.

55,61,67 last year was 76-79, this year he has wrestled 82-85-90 depending on birthday parties, holidays, family get togethers and the weather. We are doing a little better job of bouncing this year instead of picking a weight and trying to maintain it. Plus he gets to wrestle different people every week without having to travel to different tournaments.

This is my 10 year old, wrestling at his natural weight, no effort made to cut. 66-66-65-75-73. he usually weighs in a pound or two under. The kids he started with are spread from 76-105, pretty evenly. All of them are different!

My youngest who is in the top half of the 8U this year went 43,49,52,58 and 64 this year.
My other son who is 1 year older and is in the bottom half of 10U this year went 49,49,49,52,58 and 67 this year.

The big jumps the last two year made me nervous about their ability to handle the strength differences. However, they have both bought into the concept of good overall fitness and that lots of pull ups and push ups year round are the best way to turn that extra mass into useable muscle.

As a former HS coach I am familiar with weight management but have found that with young kids you are generally better off focusing on superior technique and getting into great condition. The trade off of getting one weight lower usually is not worth the mental and emotional strain to kids younger than 13-14. It may cost you the occasional match against really tough competition against bigger kids but it reduces the rate of burnout. If a kid is really serious and has long range goals such as HS, college or beyond he will have plenty of years to manage his weight. They need to learn their technique and become students of the sport at this age.
