Most of the time the head official is an older more experience official (hence they are the head), so they are more likely to catch minor infractions, shoes not taped, hair too long, etc. Not saying it's always the case but would fit your scenario. Be glad it was caught at Ark City not at Subs or Districts where it could have cost your son the season.
