Haper has the lead with 84 points they have 4 wrestlers on the front and 4 on the backside. NW Wyoming is setting at 2nd with 72.5 points, 4 wrestlers on the front side with 3 on the backside. LCC is in 3rd with 69 points, but only has 5 wrestlers left in the tournament, all of them are on the front side. Iowa Central has 3 on the front and 2 on the back and his behind the Cardinals by 4 points. Should be an intersting second day for the Cardinals.

If Travis Budke of Pratt is going to All-American again he'll have to make another backside tear like last year.

Regardless of Harper's division, the team competed in the same NJCAA Tournament with Labette and Iowa Central and finished in first place.

Harper wins 2010 NJCAA Wrestling Championship

Harper wins 2010 NJCAA Wrestling Championship
February 27, 2010

DES MOINES, IOWA -- Harper College (Ill.) captured the 2010 NJCAA Wrestling Championship Saturday, Feb. 27 in Des Moines, Iowa. The Hawks accomplished the feat as a non-scholarship awarding program and also ended Iowa Central Community College's four year championship run in the sport.

Harper's 137 team points was well in front of Iowa Central's 116 in the final standings. Labette Community College (Kan.) came in third with 105.5 points, North Idaho College was fourth with 99 points and St. Louis CC - Meramec (Mo.) rounded out the top five with 96.5 points.

Wrestlers Win 2010 NJCAA Championship!Posted 02/28/2010 10:34AM
Harper College head wrestling coach Dan Loprieno sent 9 wrestlers to Des Moines for the 2010 NJCAA Championships and the team returns with the National Championship! This is the 4th national championship for the wrestling team (1994, 2001, 2006 and 2010), and the 10th national championship for Harper's athletic program.

The Hawks led the way with 137 team points - dominating second place Iowa Central Community College's 116 points. Iowa Central had won the title for the last 4 seasons.

Individually, Josh Kratovil captured the national title at 141 pounds, defeating Vinny Pisani of Iowa Central, 10-4.

Four additional Hawks earned All-American honors for their performance in the championship: Luke Roth took second place in the 157 pound class, Jordan Bakley finished in third place at 174 pounds, Eduardo Dominguez was fourth at 125 pounds, and Mike Dace also took fourth in the 165 pound weight class.

Division 1 in NJCAA is the Scholarship Division much like NCAA D1 and D2. Division 3 is the non-scholarship division much like the NCAA D3. They hand out separate awards for the teams but lump everyone together individually.

Nice head butt by Vinny Pisani with 2 seconds left in the match after getting his rear end kicked in the finals at 141 lbs (almost 5 minutes riding time). Showed he has no class and is simply a sore loser.

I thought the other Junior colleges could give financial assitance?????? Is that academic scholarship or athletic scholarships. Or do they look at total number of available scholarships. 9.9 vs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 scholarships. So does Harper offer 9.9 scholarships - is that what that means?

Labette brought home the runner-up trophy in Div. 1 NJCAA. This may be the first time that a division III NJCAA school ever earned more points than anyone in the tourney. The winner of the Div. III title has typically ended up around 5th overall. Harper was dang tough this year.

The Labette boys battled out there and ended up with five All Americans, including three finalists and two champs. The champs won in convincing fashion! Labette could return all three finalists next year.

125- This is what it's all about! Colin Hase stepped up and brought everything he had finishing in 5th place. He went unscored on the first day of the tourney! Zero points scored against him and a win over Slyter. He lost to the OW the next day and nearly put himself in the 3rd place match but came up just short in the closing seconds.

133- Curtis came up short of AA status but he emptied out his guns doing so. He threw everything he had but just came up short against better wrestlers. Curtis was an AA last year.

149- Stots was a returning AA but just couldn't get rolling.

157- Nelson earned the title in dominant fashion. One of only two freshman to do that for the Cardinals. As always he was impressive.

165- Rutherford was expected to bring home an AA title but came up short.

174- Wright wrestled his signature style up through the finals and just wrestled a little too conservative to get the win there. He came home with an impressive 2nd place finish.

184- Derek Thompson wrestled out to the semi's before losing and wrestling to a 4th place finish. This is Derek's second AA title.

197- Walker Clarke showed the skills he has in route to a national championship. One word...slick! Domination in the finals against an opponent that had previously beat him.

HWT - Weske stepped up an battled against much bigger opponents. He had a big heart but just not enough size. He came to wrestle though.

Overall the cards looked pretty solid this year. If a couple more guys had wrestled better it would have been a title year. Most of the guys showed toughness and a big heart in their effort. Renfro ended up being awarded both Coach of the Year and Man of the Year. The Cards ended up with two individual champs...that's a first. There were things to celebrate even though the effort to win the title was a little short.

No "athletic scholarships" but they do have financial aid packages available for them.

Just reading back through the posts. Sorry for no updates in the tourney. I left my computer home and my phone charger. I left last minute and a little unprepared.

Tim is absolutely right about the DIII vs. DI tourney standings. They all wrestle together but it has always been a seperate set of trophies. DIII and DI both crown champions and top six every year. I can tell you that Iowa Central was celebrating their 5th championship. Holding up five fingers is pretty clear. Is there an asterisk by that fifth one...sure. This is the first time anyone that I spoke to could remember a DIII team having the most points. Labette has a trophy that says 2nd place. The one they won in 2005 says 1st place and they also outscored all the DI and DIII schools that year.
