You make the argument for Pete Mehringer being the best ever to come out of the state of Kansas by saying you don't know of anyone who could read a book and become a great wrestler and, in fact, an Olympic Gold Medalist a few years later.
He didn't just read a book and become an Olympic champion anyway. It took at least 6-7 years before he reached this milestone.

There is always more to the story than just the legend. He was a great all-around athlete and if you win an Olympic Gold in wrestling in any era, you are a stud, especially at the light heavyweight division. Saying Mehringer couldn't compete in this era is like saying Jesse Owens couldn't compete in this era-- I am not buying it.
