Why do kids have to make weight, if tournaments are giving .9 allowance??? If this is going to be the standard, then qualifiers and state should do the same. Our kids watch their weight all week then are told this tournament is giving .9.....If it is due to track wrestling or a rebracket problem, then why do we have weight divisions......make the weight or don't wrestle.....Giving kids false hope going into the Classic and Qualifiers is wrong in my opinion.

The problem isn't that a tourney gives .9 or whatever. It's that it isn't disclosed on their flyer or website. Even worse is when it is done selectively. If you are giving weight make it know so everyone is on the same playing field. Personally I've always felt no allowance is the way to go. Wrestle your weight or move up.

Move them up a weight class and then they won't have to watch their weight through the week.

Agreed...if you're 2 lb. Over move up....but .9 makes it too easy to be allowed to wrestle....Too close to state to give a allowance is all I'm saying. Nobody can say they don't watch brackets this late in the season....Make the weight or move up....

I agree with no weight allowance. Either make it or don't wrestle. When you continually allow kids to skate through it just makes it that much easier to want to pull to the next weight down. Spotsfan--- since when does eating healthy and watching what they eat such a bad thing. I would rather watch my kids diet so that he is intaking healthy food instead of junk. Cut the junk out of a kids diet and they feel like your starving them or depriving them. Eating healthy is not wrong it's HEALTHY. Not every kid in wrestling needs to move up a weight. Big big difference in maintaining and cutting. But then I forgot that my words are falling on deaf ears with you being the all-knowing coward with no name. Mike Pirl

I beleive ounces should not be counted. My boy always weighs around 49.2. I sign him up at 52 just so he doesn't have to worry about it. A few weeks back they combined 52-55 brackets. My boy who tecnically weighs 49 was out there wrestling 55 pounders. I think every tournament should not count ounces until sub-district. Making a kid run who is a few ounces over is ridiculous.

acually a scale does not measure by ounces it measures by 1/10 of a pound so for every tenth of a pound ='s 1.6 ounces. So if your boy was .2 over it would be 3.2 ounces over.
alot of people when the see .5 they assume its 5 ounces but it would be 8 ounces = to a 1/2 pound.
.1= 1.6 ounces .2=3.2 ounces .3=4.8 ounces .4=6.4 ounces .5=8 ounces=1/2 pound .6=9.6 ounces .7=11.2 ounces .8=12.8 ounces .9=14.4 ounces .10 well we know thats not on a scale because it would = 16 ounces wicth would be a pound.
i hope math class with nix was helpful i sure hope my figures are right

i would like to see all tornaments go to a .2 over standard just because of diffrent scales. i do not know how many tournaments we have been 2 that jeffrey was over .2 and they had him step on another scale and he was .2 under was it the scale or him we will never know. but 99.9% of scales will not be over or under2 tenths of a pound.
i know some will say if your that close move up. well maybe.
our rule of thumb is if jeffrey eats a full dinner then weighs in on friday nite thats his weight.
as for saturday weigh ins we wiegh before we eat, and we only do that because of colby last year. we drove from scott city to colby left at 6 and we stoped to have breakfast before weigh ins and wouldn't you know it jeffrey weighed in at .2 over and they would not let him wrestle. we did not have time to run it off since we weighed in at the last minute. with out breakfast he would have been a pound under.
so we learned our lesson it was a long drive home and a waste of money for being .2 over it will never happen again.

I used to be real big on make the weight or dont wrestle!!! But an extra pound does not make the match. On the other hand I hear people say well then move them up a weight class well... You weigh 102 wrestling 110 and they combined that with a 120 class and that kid cuts a few pounds every week and now your stuck giving 20 pounds! Now thats tough for the avg kid!!

I know its on the parents to make sure on each of their kids weight but these are "kids", each one growing and getting stronger all wrestling season. Make the weight issue be about the kids being taken care of now health wise! As a wise many have said before on this board its "kids wrestling". Let's make the weight issues something they worry about at the next level. Wrestle them up if their that close. Healthier for the kids and parents to not stress over during the week.

I have posted on this subject before. In the past 9 years I have learned one thing. Wrestling is 90% MENTAL. IMO. How can a kid be menatally sound if he or she can't eat a snickers or a cupcake at school for little Johnny's birthday party? I have to agree with "move your kid up". If they are watching their weight then they probably dont get the candy, pop, cake and cookies. (KID STUFF)
I remember a Sports Illustrated article "ROBO QB: THE MAKING OF A PERFECT ATHLETE." He wasn't allowed to have (KID STUFF). How did he do as an athlete?
I know some kids are dedicated to make the descision of watching their weight on their own. BUT, I have seen more kids pressured by parents, coaches and teams (at the youth level) to drop weight. Reasons being they can't compete at the next weight up or running from competition. "SCARED TO LOOSE"
My solution for the 9th year in a row to fix the weight issue for kids and HS is:
MAT SIDE WEIGH-INS!!!!!!!!!!!!
No comebacks of what a nightmare at a tournament!!!!! Buy more scales!!!!!!

Mat side weigh ins again really? Why? So kids can eat candy and junk food, obserd. Endulging once in a while as a treat fine. No big deal. Whats wrong with a kid being self disiplined with a mind set on health and nutrition? Can't eat a cup cake? Yes I can but then maybe tomorrow instead of school lunch.. I'll take some fruit and yogert. MMM great cup cake. No problem.
Teach your kids nutrition and health. It will serve them later in life.
Oh and make weight or don't wrestle. Now if a tournament is giving weight allowence. Thats up to them but I don't even tell my wrestlers thier doing it. Just make weight no big deal

This wasn't meant to be an issue of move up or healthy eating habits.....We ran weigh ins last night and by giving a full .9 nobody had to work to make weight....just had the theory of oh well, we're good......if that's the case then why can't kids certify like high schoolers? They are growing at a faster rate.....than a 15-18 year old.

Spexy I get your point and Understand. I've never understood the duals and tournaments we go too that sat weights are 61,64,67 +2 lb allowence why not call it 63,66,69 idk. but do disagree with any allowence or leanency.

I agree with wood won mat side weigh ins would stop a lot of the weight cutting. And kids would still eat healthy for mat side weigh ins. Kids (USA) wrestling don't need to cut weight, they will get enough of that in high school. In my opinion, if you are opposed to mat side weigh ins, you are worried about your kid not making weight. If you can not step on the scale every time you wrestle and make weight (whether you eat healthy or eat junk food) you should probably move up a weight class. Eating healthy falls on the parents no matter how the weigh ins are done.

i see 1 problem with mat side weigh in.
i think this it would be more dangerous to the kids with mat side weigh in's my reason being. you step on the scale your 1st match you are 1/2 to 1 pound under great u made weight a pound under. now you throw in 1 bottle of water and a healty lunch now your over there goes your day.
you would have kids not drinking the proper amount of water and not eating through out the day just to make weight for the next match. in return would not be good for them. i am just saying it could happen.
as for friday and saturday weigh ins, after you made weight they will eat and drink plenty of fluids and eat through out the day.
it's sad to say but you and i know some parents would put there kids in this very situation. having friday and saturday weigh ins, we can protect these kids because there parents will let them drink and eat through out the wrestling day.
i can see this now little johny makes weight first match, goes out and wrestles, afterwards johny says dad i am thirsty hey son you have to make weight again only a sip of water. this would play out all day every match johny has, until his last match when he goes out there to wrestle and falls out due to dehydration. and this can and will happen with some of the parents we have in this sport. does it make it right? no!!! just the hard facts of the sport of what some parents will put the kids through.

I really get frustrated when my son follows the rules, checks in at his proper weight IN WHICH WE REGISTERED TO WRESTLE only to find out that the tournament combined weights and now you are wrestling kids in a higher weight class!!!!!!! This was really frustrating at the maize tournament when you paid more for that tournament because you wanted to win a belt in your weight class, and bingo they combined weights! If we just wanted mat time we could have paid less money and went to another tournament. Maize was a good tournament but when you hype up winning a belt, please don't combine weights in the future....just my opinion.

Weight classes are weight classes, make weight or don't wrestle. As a coach if a wrestler weighs at 110.4 I register him/her at 120. the weight class is 110.0 not 110.2 or 111. They can either manage their weight through the season or move up. Most of these kids are too young to have to worry about weight. Don't get me wrong there are some kids who could stand to lose a pound or two. Thats where the parents come in. They should know the wrestler well enough to make that call.
