For my own interest I did a finger drill on the wrestling set up in the surrounding states
Kansas: 224 schools with wrestling. Four classes with 32,32, 64, 96 schools. Classes established on school enrollments. 8 bracket regionalss in 5A and 6A. 16 bracket regionals in 4A and 321A. Four state tournament sites.
Colorado: 233 schools with wrestling. 4 classes with 4 regionals in each class (2A: 58 biggest schools, 3A: next 44 schools, 4A: 66 schools, 5A: 65 schools). Do not know how and why they establish their classes.
Missouri: 224 schools with wrestling. 4 classes, each class with 56 schools. 4 districts (regionals) in each class with 14 schools. Appears that classes (in all Sports) in Missouri are established by dividing the number of schools in a sport by a 4 or eight. Missouri sports have different numbers of participating schools in the different classes, i.e, wrestling 224 schools, basketball 324 schools. One state tournament site (U. of Missouri) with a 3 day tournament, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Iowa: 250 +/- schools. 3 classes with 8 districts in each class: Class 3: (big schools) 64 schools with 8 schools per district, Class 2: 90 schools, Class 1: 96 schools. One state tournament site for the individual state tournament. Iowa also has a State Duals tournament. I think the top two teams in each district advance to the 3 class state duals tournament held a week after the individual tournament.. I am not sure all this about Iowa is all corredt. Not explained very well on the IHSAA website.
Nebraska: 212 schools in 4 classes with 4 districts in each class: Class A: 32 (8 schhols per district), Class B: 48 schools (12 schools per district), Class C: 64 schools (16 schools per district), Class D: 68 schools (17 schools per district.
Oklahoma: 146 schools in 4 classes with 2 16 bracket regionals in each class, except 3A. Class 6A: 32 schools, Class 5A: 32 schools, Class 4A: 32 schools, Class 3A: 50 schools with 26 and 24 school regionals. One 2 day state tournament site. oklahoma also does a Dual State tournament. I think the top 2 teams in each regional advance to the class dual tournament.
No two states are the same. Close, but some differences. Differences caused by number of schools, school enrollments, land area size of the states, distribution of schools by class within the separate state. So each state organizes as the powers think best! To change it you have to convince the powers that change is better.
