The Panther Wrestling Team competed in their first tournament of the season at the Baker Open on Sunday, November 4. The team came away with one Champion, another finalist, and a 3rd place finisher. Sophomore Le'Roy Barnes highlighted the day by winning the 133 lb. weight class in dominating fashion with two pins and a major decision in the finals. Those two falls also won him the most falls in the least amount of time award.

Freshman Tim Prescott finished 2-0 on the day and finished second at 125 lbs. by forfeiting in the finals after the coaching staff decided to rest him after his semifinal victory. Another freshman, Terrence Moore at 141 lbs. finished third.

Next action for the Panthers will be this Thursday, November 8 at home against rival and defending National Champions Labette at 7:30pm.

Comments from Head Coach Petterson: “Our day at the Baker Open went pretty good. We were the only junior college there and our guys got some wins and matches under their belt. Since Baldwin is a short drive we make this a one day event so our departure time is a test in itself at 4:30am."

"We feel good about Terrence and his first college tournament. He was in the hunt and opened some eyes. Tim Prescott had a little ailment so we decided to pull him out of the finals, but he looked good."

"Then Le'Roy showed why he is ranked number one in the nation after a slow start in his opening match by dominating the field."

"We had some other guys that battled hard and came up short due to some mistakes and that happens. An example of that was freshman Kyle Graumenz at 149 who was leading 7-1 in the consolation semi's when he relaxed for a split second and was taken to his back and pinned."

"We definitely had other guys who battled hard and showed improvement. Now we will review our mistakes with corrections and get ready for Labette.”
