This is not fair cry St. James did not bring their whole squad. mad They should not be allowed to go to anymore tournaments without a full squad. cry Is there any way to punish them for making this tournament weak and meaningless? wink grin

Looks like a hard weekend for all involved. Congrats to those who went and competed. Tough tourneys make tough wrestlers.

Both true statements! If SJA and Ark City had wrestled the Johnson County Classic--surely Johnson County would have let Ark City in as a visitor, than both would placed higher than their 26th an 23rd places in the Stampede.

May even have helped improve Kansas HS wrestling!

Mr. Mason - as a fan of the sport your opinions deserve our respect; however, you are completely wrong here. Much has changed in the last 30 or so years. Today many kids specialize in just one sport, and they do it all year long. As such, the top kids in our sport are so much better than years ago. For these kids to be able to compete, they need to find the best competition. Instead of being criticize, they should be commended. AND, THIS HELPS THE WHOLE STATE. The additional skills these kids gain by seeking out the best coaching and competition, ultimately returns to the State of Kansas and can serve to improve the whole state. Every kid these kids wrestle has an opportunity to improve. I understand this is a strange concept to those at KSHSAA and others. They seem to believe in the 'big fish in a small pond' concept. However, that does not improve the state as a whole. That is what is really sad here, your opinions, whether they are supported or not on this forum, are widespread in Kansas. I have seen an individual criticize USA Kansas for supporting the School Boy Duals. The sad part is his kid was on the team the year earlier. I have seen the short-sighted support of KSHSSA rules on travel, etc. I believe one of the Missouri teams traveled to Ohio a few weeks ago. They did fairly well this weekend at the Stampede. Its time to move past this attitude and see what can be done to bring the rest of the state up to the level where they can compete at tournaments like this. Mr. Mason I understand your beliefs, but its time to look at the other side of the argument, just like Will has been saying for years.

Sorry I was so long winded, but my day started early at Paola with my grandson. Just doing my part to improve the state. And, we travel to Missouri and Kansas for practice....

There were some awesome finals matches this evening. I wouldn't trade five Jo Co Classic championship trophies for our showing this weekend. Yes, we are banged up (two with a bad backs, another with pneumonia, bad shoulder, and today a dislocated index finger (yea, I told him to tape it up and get on the mat but he decided it was too painful) but we fought hard and battled against the best. Heck, freshman Clay Lautt got Freddy Stroker in his pool and then Gary Wayne H for his first round today! You don't get those kind of matches very many places. We have two months to get ready for state and I think this weekend let us know where we needed to improve and that is what we will focus on doing, IMPROVING! Bill, I think you should get a rule 10 coaching job somewhere and if you do I promise we will burn a comp point to dual you in your gym. Since you know so much about how this SHOULD be done, you should JUST DO IT!

Happy Holidays!

Mr. Mason I can see you do not get it. And I understand it can be confusing. It is not difficult to only hit local tournaments and look good and do well locally. But stepping outside and hitting hard tournaments in other areas test wrestlers and teams to see what's out there. And current count on college scouts at KC stampede I was told 5. How many u think were at Johnson co. Classic none. I'm guessing. Good for Kansas wrestling.. people getting out and noticed in ur home town

First of all...My original comments were satirical, except for last few sentences.

Second...no respect is deserved or given to Bill the Soccer Coach Mason. He does not bring up any legitimate points. He is only trying to stir the pot, or is truly an idiot. I have not figured that one out yet.

Third...Teams don't get better unless they push themselves.

Lastly...I apologize for taking away from this thread. I thought poking fun would make Old Bill realize how ignorant he sounded last week from crying and complaining. I had no idea he would take me serious.

Just a side note about the Stampede... The Stillwater OK team is being coached by Neil Erisman, former Desoto KS HS State Champ. Their team is loaded and very fundamentally sound. Congrats to Neil on his team's second place finish.

Mr. Cokeley. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!.

MY only point is that good Kansas teams should seek to improve Kansas HS wrestling. They can best do that by wrestling--at least in season--the top local/regional/statewide tournaments--such as your hometown Johnson County Classic. Your good wrestlers can help other good Kansas wrestlers improve. All you are doing is helping wrestlers from Oklahoma, Iowa, Nebraska, etc. get better. But perhaps you do not want Kansas wrestlers to improve---you may have to face them in regionals or at state.

One of your last posts I took to be a real personal slam. I was trying to congratulate and encourage a dad and his freshman son (who had a 12-3 varsity record) and said I would see them at state. Your caustic reply was that I did not know enough about KS HS wrestling to include that the 4A State Tournament is hosted at Salina. Sir, you need to find a dictionary and learn the difference between "figurative" and "literal. I do not have to "literally" go to Salina to see this young man, I can figuratively see/track him and his success on this forum, in the newspaper, probably on Tracwrestling, and hopefully someone will stream the 4A tournament. You Must have missed word study in HS and be a product of you Liberal education.

Don' knock soccer or my coaching. First, coaching is coaching. I have coached all levels of soccer (up to competitive HS club teams), T ball, and baseball, football and basketball up to ages 14 or 15. Never wrestled, never claimed to be anything other than a fan. Up to two years ago I was a volunteer soccer coach for a U10 co-ed recreation team (that's Under age 10 for you one sport fans). I am dedicated HS sports fan and watch all HS sports year around--from FB, VB and soccer in the fall, to BB, SB and track in the spring--probably a lot more so than you who has only one interest and knows only one sport.

So good luck in your travels but thought you would have scored/placed higher than you finishes in Council Bluffs or KCMO. I think that your team and individual scores relative to the top teams in those tournaments indicates your wrestlers were mostly getting slammed by their better wrestlers/placers, and/or at least getting beat by their lesser quality wrestlers.

Anything I have said in any of my posts is not intended to attack or denigrate or criticize any of the SJA wrestlers or their accomplishments. They are all fine young athletes, do a great job, and are willing to face/wrestle anyone!

Bill, Bill, Bill,

You are truly clueless. You called the SJA competitors in Eudora "scrubs". That is not an attack?? SJA took a limited squad to both the Stampede and Council Bluffs. Since you are reading all of my posts so closely you surely saw the explanation. You cannot compete for a team championship with only half of the number of possible wrestlers scoring. Since you are SO experienced at coaching I would have assumed you could figure this out. Out of the seven wrestlers competing yesterday, six made the gold bracket, the top 16 out of 40, and five of those made the top 8. You said we got SLAMMED yet you are not criticizing or denigrating?? Are you on meds? Your wife would do you a great service to take your keyboard away. There were 30 nationally ranked wrestlers competing yesterday. There were more state champion medals in Hale arena than all of Kansas added together. If we had a tournament with EVERY Kansas team in it, all 220 or so, there would be just TWO nationally ranked wrestlers. You sir do not have a clue when it comes to wrestling. This will be the last time I even give you the respect of responding to your dribble. I would call you an idiot but that would be an insult to the true idiots out there. You cannot get better wrestling each other over and over. The best way to get better is to lose and expose yourself to the BEST competition available. The top three teams in KS did so this weekend and we didn't crack the top 10. What does that tell you Bill?

I don't like soccer and this is a wrestling talk forum so sure I am going to poke a little fun at it just like we do basketball. Both are GAMES, wrestling is a combat sport. Since you have never wrestled you can't really get it. I am glad you enjoy it so why don't you just do that and leave the rest to those who invest their time, money, and effort directly into it. I don't need your insight and my kids don't need to be criticized by you either. Go find a good soccer forum and share your ideas there.

As much we get to partake of Cokeley's expertise on this forum and hear about all they big out of state tournaments his SON's school goes to, I do not see any of their ex HS wrestlers on the lists of KS HS grads in either D1 or D2 wrestling programs (see the lists on the College Forum).

Why do we only hear from Cokeley--where is their HS coach defending his programs, wrestlers, travels?
