If your wrestler finished in 7th place, he has the first opportunity to go as an alternate. We can have a maximum of 3 alternates per team - 18 total. There are always lots of changes to the teams so in many cases, the 7th (and sometimes even the 8th) place finisher moves up to one of the 6 teams. Watch the talk forum as I will update the teams any time there is a change.
Alternates get the same gear, etc..
Alternates have 2 choices on what to do at the duals.
First, they can be an alternate on one of the 6 Kansas teams - but that does not guarantee any matches. The only way they would get matches in that situation is if each of the opposing teams we dual has an alternate at the same weight(give or take one weight class). They would wrestle at the conclusion of each individual dual. Also, last year, Kansas ran a separate ALTERNATES ONLY mat where alternates come to that mat and paired up with other alternates from other states and wrestle. Hopefully, the tournament director will allow us to do that again this year.
The second option is to get on one of the 2 ALTERNATE TEAMS that are made up of alternates from all the other states. They call these teams Team Vision and Team Quest. These 2 teams are entered just like all the others and wrestle in pools on Friday and the team brackets on Saturday. Keeping in mind that the idea is to get the most matches possible - almost all of our alternates in the past have decided to wrestle on one of these 2 alternate teams.
Once the 6 Teams are set and we have our alternates determined, I will assign 3 alternates to each team. If a team member on one of the six teams gets injured, and we have an alternate assigned to that team and at the same weight, we will pull that alternate from one of the 2 alternate teams (Team Vision and Quest). We want to avoid any opens if at all possible.
I know there are only 17 weight classes and we can take 18 alternates. In the past we have rarely taken the maximum alternates allowed. In fact, most of the time we end up with a couple from several of the 60 to 100 lb classes. We historically have more participation in those weights
Once again, watch the talk forums - rarely do I have a wrestler that wants to go as an alternate and ends up not getting to.
I need the 7th place finishers who are interested in going as an alternate to email me.
