September 21 - Bill Christnerhttps://kwca.podomatic.com/Bill Christner went out on top. The Abilene coach won the last of his three state titles in his final year at the helm of the Cowboys program in 2003. That season marked an impressive second half of his sixteen-year tenure that included seven top ten State finishes in a row. Among those finishes were titles in 1998, 1999 and 2003 and a third-place trophy in 2001.
Christner started his wrestling coaching career at Smith Center where he was an assistant from 1982-85. From 1985-87, he spent time as an assistant at Abilene, his alma mater, before taking over the program in 1987.
He continued to teach and coach at Abilene Middle School until his retirement in 2015. He coached a variety of sports at AMS including Track & Field, Wrestling, and Golf.
His Hall of Fame induction comes after his storied career that came with several Coach of the Year honors and other recognition; not bad considering his one-year competitive wrestling career during his senior year at Abilene High.
In addition to his accomplishments at the 4A State tournament, the Christner-led Cowboys accumulated 109 dual victories and won five North Central Kansas League titles. His teams also brought home five Regional titles.
Coach Christner participated in both football and Track & Field at Bethany College during his undergrad days. He also has a Master's Degree from Kansas State University.
Since retiring he has focused on his ranching business in the Abilene area.
