Unfortunately, Kansas HS wrestlers are not allowed to compete in the Oklahoma Open in Norman because it is Thanksgiving weekend and the HS season is underway. This is unfortunate b/c it is a high quality event. The only way for a HS wrestler to attend would be to not yet join the HS team until after Thanksgiving. They would have to train on their own, but they could then compete in the OK Open. While some HS coaches may allow this for one of their wrestlers, many may not...that should be checked on with his HS coach.
I agree that it's a shame that Kansas HS wrestlers can't compete in this event for a few reasons. The OU Open simultaneously hosts the collegiate open and it's a good way for a kid to be seen by a number of quality teams like OSU, OU, UCO, Air Force and some others show up as well like the jucos from Kansas to name a few.
I also know that Edmond Memorial High School does a Pre-Turkey Open that happens the week before Thanksgiving which is open to anybody wanting to compete...they had schools from Texas and New Mexico show up. The OU OPEN is a bit bigger with Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, and Missouri among others bringing in some solid high school talent. I think Kansas needs to relook at the policy to not allow their wrestlers to compete in these tournaments...In my opinion I'd like to see this reevaluated maybe at the same time State Duals are being considered.
