Not really

I didn't write anything down, but this is what I remember.

103 HX LBF
112 HX open
119 Farber(HX) won 6-4
125 0-0 at start of 3rd period. Baker tried to suicide a cradle and got caught and lost 5-0.
130 Hoxie LBF
135 Close match. Moss (HX) lost by a couple
140 Gilliland won 16-1 TF
145 Hoxie LBF
152 Schippers (HX) won by 5.
160 Not close. Campbell lost.
171 Not close. Shipley LBF
189 Hoxie LBF
215 Hoxie lost 6-0
275 Hoxie open.

Ponderosa looked good. Dominated several matches. Schippers would have won at 145, and 135 could have gone either way, but the rest of the matches were not really in question.

I had said that I didn't think it would be a blood bath but I was wrong. listened to it on the radio and it seemed that the Ponderosa guys were quite a lot better than I thought, and at this point in time it looks as though Hoxie is just not up to the level that they were last year. I think that the NWKL tournament will bear that out, Hoxie is a group of good wrestlers, but not a great team like they were last year. Goodland and St. Francis look to be in better shape depthwise, and I think that will show. The Garden City Tournament should be interesting too, with some good wrestlers competing that will give Ponderosa a run in some weights. Ulysses, Pratt, and Scott City should take some of the steam out of their engine but I think now that they will win. Hats off to them.

I think that the dual could have been a lot better with a few matches going our way instead.
I think with J. Schippers wrestling at 145 and a few close matches going our way instead, things could have looked like this.
Hoxie Ponderosa
103 0 6
112 0 12
119 3 12
125 6 12 Think Baker could have won more than half the matches between these two
130 6 15 Don't think Schamburger would normally get pinned
135 9 15 Coulda went either way
140 15 15 With Gilliland getting the pin
145 18 15 With J. Schippers wrestling, at least 3 pts
152 21 15
160 21 19
171 21 22 If Shipley had not gotten pinned
189 21 28
215 21 31
275 21 37

This is kind of stretching it, but you can see where I think that the dual could have been a lot closer than what it was with a healthy Hoxie team. Ponderosa was crazy good, and props to them. I think the announcer Les Brown said Ponderosa has lost 2 duals since 94 and both were in 99. Their average margin of victory this year is by 66.

Coach Williams and anybody else that was there,

How do you think the other #1's in the state would have matched up with Ponderosa?

Abilene, Manhattan, KC Turner

Aaron Sweazy,
After the dual I thought about that but I am not sure the number ones in the state would have won enough matches to win the dual. The 160lbs. wrestler was real tough. At every weight they were sold and the biggest thing was you couldn't get a pin. They just kept fighting.

It is always hard to say.

Abilene would have been interesting because Ponderosa's two best kids were probably their 130# and 160#. The 130# played with Schamberger and then pinned him (total domination) and the 160# dominated Campbell. Who wins those matches in a dual with Abilene?? Would be fun to watch.

Ponderosa has some places that a team could take advantage of. For instance, some of the weights that they won against Hoxie that they didn't seem that great at were 103, 135, 145, 189, 215, and their 275 (HX open) didn't look that tough, but that can be deceiving.
They were not bad at these weights by any means, just not as amazing as they were at other weights.

Here is the frightening thought, a few people said after the dual that Ponderosa wrestled their J.V. guys at a few weights, but I don't know which ones.

Overall, I don't think I have seen a team in Kansas that could beat Ponderosa in a dual or a tournament for that matter. It will be interesting to see how close the Kansas teams can hang with them at Garden City this weekend.

Thought it was a pretty incredible display of wrestling by the much heralded Ponderosa team.

Data supplied to me by their assistant coach Wayne Rodgers read as follows:

1995 state runner-up
1996 state runner-up
1997 state champion #25 ranked team nationally
1998 state champion #9 ranked team nationally
2003 state champion #13 ranked team nationally

2 dual losses since 1994 (both came in 1999) and 88-0 in Continental League duals since joining the league in 1994.

Average margin of victory in 2003-04 66.2 points.

Combined dual scores coming into last nite 426-29.

Internet indicated Ponderosa has 1,600 +/- students in their high school.

Their 130 pounder, 160 pounder and 171 pounder were top notch. Their 125 pounder was really tough too. Farber and Schippers beat studs at 119 and 152. And of the matches contested, they were not weak at any weight, by Kansas standards.

I and a few others wondered if Ponderosa might have inserted a couple of JV kids in the line-up because of their disclosed records and because an assistant coach was very active in coaching those matches, but nearly silent in the others. But that was purely speculation on our part.

From a Hoxie fan's perspective, Hoxie was close to falls on occassion at 119 and 152, but didn't quite get it done. Gilliland looked outstanding against a freshman who is ranked in Colorado. Not out of the realm of possibility to win a rematch at 125. And - depending on whether we saw a JV kid or not - Schippers should pick up at least a 9 point team score swing at 145. But Ponderosa could conceivably win one more or win more convincingly in some bouts too.

Ponderosa was a class act. Cordial and accommodating coaches. Polite athletes. Very knowledgeable fans. And top notch wrestlers. Adequate from all three positions. Strong from neutral (160 was remarkably good from neutral). Good leggers and excellent at turning wrist control into back points from top. And Hoxie did not appear as dominating from the top position against Ponderosa as they normally are.

I am glad to have had the opportunity to see them compete. Good luck to Ponderosa as their season unfolds.

Would be curious to hear Ponderosa's thoughts regarding Hoxie's team, the small town environment and the crowd interaction at what was likely the smallest venue Ponderosa has ever performed in.

Thanks for inviting us Hoxie. We thought it was a good dual. The wrestlers fought hard on both sides. Hoxie was strong at several weights and had some exceptional wrestlers at other weights all in all I was impressed. It was the toughest dual we've had all year. We enjoyed coming to Hoxie for the dual. It's a great town and everyone was very friendly. By the way we did have a JV kid at 112 but that match was a forfeit. At 145 a JV wrestler moved up recently to varsity. We thought our freshman wrestled very well since they faced some of Hoxies best. It looked as though the Hoxie 119er was pinned. But the ref did an outstanding job throughout the dual. Thanks again. Good Luck to the Hoxie team at state.

Thank you Hoxie for a wonderful experience! The small town atmosphere was something that I haven't experienced before, and it had a pretty neat feeling. I guess the best way I can describe it is that we all had a very "welcome" feeling.

Maybe the best example of what the Hoxie folks are all about is that when the announcer was listing some of Ponderosa's accolades, the Hoxie fans actually applauded. That's unbelievable sportsmanship and something Ponderosa is definetely not used to.

Hoxie's team is very good, there's no doubt about it. Hoxie was closer to Ponderosa talent-wise than the final score indicated, and the fact that they do what they do with so few kids is remarkable. What a great bunch of kids and coaches!

I thought it was an excellent experience for Ponderosa and I hope it was for Hoxie too. Good luck to Hoxie at state and for the rest of the season.

By the way, Ponderosa had 7 champions at GC (119, 125, 130, 152, 160, 171, 215) 1 3rd (112 jv guy), and 1 4th (140). Rinaldis at 160 won the OW award.

Not trying to brag or anything, but Manhattan is a pretty good dual team. I think we would match up against Ponderosa a little better than Hoxie.
