Potter was beaten by Andrew Wagner for the varsity 25 pound spot. Jeb Woodford was sick all week, and Aaron Bingham was also sick. Jeb and Aaron will be back for league and as far as Potter goes we don't know yet.

HAHAHA...Thats pretty funny that Potter got beat out of his varsity spot. I remember always seeing on her how Potter was a big stud and Potter is a god. Now I guess he's just the JV god.

No that just tells you how tough it is to stay on varsity all year in the Manhattan practice room… Kyle has lost but not forgotten, the season is far from over.

I don't know how other teams do it but I know in Abilene after the like 2nd week in January you can no longer challenge for the varsity spots, its just wouldn't be fair for someone to lose their spot like 3 weeks before regionals, especially if they've been thre all year.

You should always put your best man out on the mat, no matter what point in the season you have reached. If you aren't good enough to beat the JV guy in your own matroom, how are you going to do well at state?

Congrats, Aquinas!

See thats just the thing Dingbat, just because you beat someone one time doesn't mean you are "the best man" And if that one time you beat someone just happens to be the week before regionals you could be in fact not having the best man out on that mat. In any case I think after 3 state titles and being in the top 4 at State 6 out of the last 7 years, Abilene fields a pretty good team not having to challege after the second week in January and must be doing something right as far as knowing who should be in the varsity lineup, so your arguement is not really valid.

Of course it's invalid Nigel, anything that is not your opinion must be invalid. Personally, I agree with him, you should be able to challenge whenever you want. If it's close to regionals then make it a two out of three series to avoid having a match where one kid gets lucky.

But really Nigel, you need to stop being so obdurate. Not everyone does things the Abilene way and you need to accept that. Perhaps you may even see that their way are better, whether it's how you would want to do it or not.

Railer04,

I have great respect for your wrestlers on Herington's team based on the walk you all walk, Keep it that way. Manhattan has depth and that just shows you how important it is to give almost all you've got during practice in a setting such as what they have.

Nigel,

I know we used to have challenge matches the week of regionals...my senior year coach arranged a challenge match for me against John Paul Shepherd for Heavyweight, and when I lost in the 2 out of 3 series, I had to defend my varsity spot at 215 in a 2 out of 3. It's different for some coaches.

Actually Lancer this is how it works in Manhattan… After the league tournament the team is locked down. It all depends on who has the most varsity time through out the season on what kind of 2 of 3 scenarios you’re talking about.

Sorry parkwayred, I wasn't meaning to make it sound like that's how everybody else does it. I know different teams do different things and I was saying how we basically do it. However, I just get kind of tired with how Nigel is so critical of people sometimes.

I wrestled for Anderson County last year and ran into the same problem that manhattan is having. I had a really good friend of mine who was also a senior right behind me on JV. Did he deserve to be on JV? Hell no!! That kid could have easily been in the top 10 for 135 4a last year. He might have even been able to beat a couple kids I lost to at state. However, all year long we were wrestling off for the 135 spot and right after I placed first at the Kearney tournament in MO. I thought I was wrestling better than ever, however he finally beat me in a 2 out of 3 match that week. He got to wrestle varsity for the concordia tournament and I had to sit at home. I just wish that he could have been at a different weight class than me so that he would have had the experience of going to state. However when you have a team with 4 or 5 (or maybe even more) good wrestlers wrestling for 3 or 4 spots, someone has to lose out.

I never said that Abilene's way is the only way. I did say that they seem to be pretty darn successful the way they do it. I’m entitled to my opinion which I offered. Dingbat said putting the best man out on the mat was the best way, I said perhaps that is true but just because you win 1 match or even 2 out of 3 in a week doesn’t make you the best man. So I’d appreciate it if you would follow your own advice and stop being critical of me. You have no right to tell me what to do and I will continue to post how I see fit, if you don't like it you can either continue to whine about it which won't do any good, or you can just not read the forums, either way I don't care.

Jhris said that Potter has been beaten the past 2 times in wrestle-offs, so in this case Wagner has been wrestling better than Potter has lately. I would say that until Potter can beat him again, Wagner is now the better wrestler since he has won twice in a row. It's as simple as that. Id have to say that he's been doing a **** fine job of filling Potter's shoes so far too. On the subject of how late in the season you can challenge, i know Clay Center has it where you can challenge up until the monday or tuesday of regionals week.

Nigel--try this one on for size. When I was a junior, I wrestled JV for the majority of the season. The week before regionals I won my wrestle-off (best of three) for the varsity spot. Two weeks later I won my first of two state titles.

The point is, some wrestlers peak at different points in the season, so not giving them the opportunity to compete is completely unfair.

I think that makes my point "valid.'
