With the Frontier adding Desoto, Ottawa, and Central Heights and going to a two-day league tournament next year it will raise the bar. It sounds like they may create two six-man pools and then have the top four in each come out for an eight-man finals bracket.

Now the NCKL is tough. But the best league in the state? Concordia/Marysville/Chapman/Wamego??? No offense to Aaron Sweazy, but 66% of those teams don't exactly strike fear into the hearts of men.
I would agree with The Godfather, Les Brown, and vote for the NWKL. To claim that the I-70 is the toughest league in the state with teams such as Salina Central, Topeka High and Topeka West is pretty absurd.

I will revamp my statement and say that the NCKL is the toughest in 4a. We had 5 state champs last year and 3 teams in the top 10 with Abilene winning. Pretty good for a league that only has 6 teams. I will say though, that the NWKL is one of the toughest in the state, if not the toughest.

the MCL and NWKL are the powers of the 3-2-1-a state tourney the MCL is headed by norton who has won the leage trouney 5 years in a row and is backed up by some verry tallented teams like plainville, smith-center, Trego-wakeeney, phillipsburg, and ellis who usually find themselves in the top ten at state, and would prolly finish better if it were not for the rediculously tough NW regional. but above all is the NWKL which, i believe, is head and shoulders above every one else in the state

Ok I'm coming to the defense of NCKL on the they don't strike fear in the hearts of teams comment. I think NCKL doesn't get a lot of credit it should, I think if you overlook Concordia you are in trouble...Concordia is no slouch and is one of 3 teams in the league to win at least one state title in the last 10 years for their team. They beat Salina South (albeit South might have had guys missing, but it was still a win)

I am going to have to agree with most others in saying that the NWKL is the toughest league. It isn't that some of these other lgs. are not tough but as far as being "the toughest" (best) I don't see how anything compares with NWKL and MCL being next.

just thought everyone might have some interest in this...the Top 2 from the last 20 years 1983-2003 (1st place teams listed 1st, 2nd are 2nd):
83 Atchison County, Columbus
84 Beloit, Columbus
85 Beloit, Columbus
86 Columbus, Wellington
87 Columbus, Augusta
88 Concordia, Augusta
89 Columbus, Concordia
90 Scott City, Wellington
91 Wellington, Columbus
92 Columbus, Ulysses
93 Clearwater, Scott City
94 Scott City, Ulysses
95 Concordia, Paola
96 Columbus & Ulysses (tie), Paola
97 Goodland, Ulysses
98 Abilene, Goodland
99 Abilene, Columbus
00 Goodland, SFT
01 Colby, Scott City
02 Clay Center, Goodland
03 Abilene, Goodland & Columbus (tie)
It should be noted that Beloit was a member of the NCKL when it won its State Titles...not sure on some of the other teams....Most consistent I'd have to say over the years has been Columbus with 11 first or second finishes in the last 20 years.

Strike fear or not Grant, we are the teams that are out there winning the state tournament. 4 out of 5. Much better than I can say for other leagues.

If you are going by sheer number of state titles then the Ark Valley would win by volumes. Do the research and you would see that the Ark Valley has by far the most team state titles and individual titles than any other league. Combining that with the smaller schools that are just now getting their programs together in the CTL it would be the best in the state without question.

The problem is not knowing who are in what leagues...we truly need a link that shows the league and the teams within it to truly be able to disect the state and toughness of conferences/leagues.

http://www.calpreps.com/2003/Kansas.htm That's a football page that has all of the schools in the state and what leagues they are in. Some don't have wrestling teams, though. Ex: West Elk is the only school in the South Central Border League with a wrestling team.

Bravo for remembering that site...I looked at that all during football season because some media markets don't update local schools as well, but a California based one can.

Pups, Didn't I read somewhere that they were no longer going to cover non-cali sports because it had become too much?

I don't know, I hadn't been to that site much since football season ended.

Like the shirt says "Why go to wichita we have state in Goodland" Makes it easier on the far eastern schools if their good wrestlers make it to state. just my opinion.....*sorry for the double post

not today -
I and others have done the research. But I do not know what other teams are in the Ark Valley League. Can you let me know who the teams are?
I am probably wrong (it wouldn't be the first time), but I question whether the Ark Valley League's totals really surpass the NWKL.
The NWKL has 56 state team titles in wrestling - see totals listed in a prior post. Of the 5 teams in state history with 10 or more team titles, 3 are from the NWKL.
And individual titles? These numbers may be off a few, but they are certainly close.
Of the top ten schools in state history in terms of individual state championships won, 5 are current NWKL members and another won over half of their current total while they were still in the NWKL.
Sainty has 98 individual champs. Oberlin has 80. Hoxie 62. Colby 51. Goodland 49. Norton had 38-41 (depending upon what year they actually left the NWKL). Oakley 37. Atwood 32. Scott City 10 +/- (again depending on when they left the NWKL). So that makes over 450 individual titles for the NWKL.
I believe Ark City has 18 team titles and 81 champs.
What other schools are in the Ark Valley League that allow them to surpass the NWKL's totals?
