LancerM, I commend you for a very well written response. However, I believe my point is still valid. I agree with you and Sweazy that it should be relatively easy for someone who speaks a foreign language as their primary language to get an A in a foreign language class. I do contend however, that it should not be difficult for someone who speaks English to "pull a B" by the time they get to High School and College. Yes, in some English classes you are required to "read great literature". It has been my experience that the required books have always been in English, therefore, that should not pose a problem. While we are not all blessed with the same level of creativity, writing an essay that is worthy of at least “pulling a B” should not pose a problem to anyone who has been paying attention in class during 12 years of studying English. As far as analyzing sentence structure, again, it comes down to paying attention in class and doing the necessary homework. The only valid excuse is if you simply lack the intelligence to comprehend the material. How do you learn wrestling moves? You learn through correct repetition during practice. How do you learn English? You learn through correct repetition during 12 years of public (or private) schooling. Do you disagree with me that most people should be able to “pull a B”, if not an A, in College English?
